Bernd Osterloh expects the upheaval in the VW Group to result in the loss of up to 25,000 jobs. However, the VW works council head also expects growth in the future areas.
The Volkswagen works council expects the switch to electric cars to cut up to 25,000 jobs in the next ten years. "That could be 1500 a year, or 2500 - depending on how many people take part in early retirement, and that over a ten-year period," said VW works council chief and supervisory board member Bernd Osterloh the "Handelsblatt".
In future areas such as software development and mobility services such as car sharing, however, new jobs would also be created at the same time, said Osterloh. He ruled out redundancies for operational reasons.
Osterloh warns of excessive goals
The employee side is currently negotiating with the low- yield core brand VW Pkw about a so-called future pact, which is intended to give the group flexibility in restructuring as well as security for the workforce. In general, it should be clarified how the locations react to industry trends such as digitization and alternative drives. It is about products, quantities, investments and the workforce. The agreements should have collective agreement status.
"We are on the right track, but the negotiations are tough," said Osterloh about talks with VW brand boss Herbert Diess. Osterloh warned that the attempt to "impose excessive goals on the backs of the workforce" could delay the conclusion of the talks. So he couldn't say whether it would be the end of the month. (dpa)
