Can-Am's three-wheelers were previously in the upper price segment. The Canadians are now launching the Ryker, an affordable entry-level model.

For the new version, those responsible have decided on a number of completely new design approaches that make the idiosyncratic middle thing between car and motorcycle appear more attractive and at the same time allow a significantly lower price. The vehicle, available at the beginning of 2019, costs around 9,800 euros, which means that the price is almost halved compared to the previous entry-level model.

Compared to the much more expensive three-wheelers of the Spyder family, the Ryker looks handy and filigree. This impression is primarily conveyed by the rear wheel guidance, for which Can-Am relies on an aluminum single-sided swing arm with an integrated cardan shaft. So far, a two-arm swing arm was installed and the power was transmitted to the rear wheel via belt drive.

The Can-Am Ryker's engine has an output of 48 hp

The engine has also been slimmed down: the basic version is powered by a 48 hp Rotax twin with a displacement of 600 cubic centimeters. An in-line three-cylinder with a displacement of 900 cubic centimeters and 78 hp is available for an extra charge. Although the engines perform significantly less than those of the Spyder models, they also have to move less mass: the basic Ryker weighs 270 kilograms, the three-cylinder version 280 kilograms, while a Spyder F3 is specified with more than 400 kilograms.

Another novelty of the Ryker series is a continuously variable CVT automatic, which promises easier handling compared to the manual five-speed transmission. As with the Spyder models, the new transmission also allows reversing.

Good security technology on board

Although slimmed down, the Can-Am Ryker is well positioned in terms of safety technology. On board are a combination disc brake system, ABS, stability system and hill start aid that can be activated via the pedal. Driving-related information is shown in the cockpit on a 4.5-inch monochrome display. The tricycle also offers adjustment options for the handlebars and footrests, two USB ports and a 7 liter storage compartment. The basic version has a single seat, optionally you can get a bench for two-person operation.

Up until now, Can-Am three-wheeler buyers in Germany were at an advanced age, but BRP is hoping to appeal to a younger clientele with the significantly cheaper but also optically more fun-to-drive Ryker. For a surcharge, Can-Am also offers an off-road version called the Rally Edition, which is optimized in several points for off-road use and is basically only offered with the more powerful three-cylinder.
