In 2016, more hybrid vehicles than ever before were sold in Germany. While electric vehicles are in the double-digit minus range despite the bonus, cars with diesel engines stayed just above the line.
The classic hybrid drive is one of the winners in the diesel crisis. Last year, according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), 34,252 passenger cars with a combination of combustion engines and electric motors were registered.
Compared to the previous year, this means an increase of 52 percent. This does not include the plug-in hybrids, which are funded with 3000 euros when buying a new car as part of the electric bonus.

The reason for the boom in drive technology, which has traditionally been vilified in Germany, is also the launch of new models. The fourth generation of the Toyota Prius started at the beginning of 2016, and Kia Niro and Hyundai Ioniq came to Germany in the middle of the year. In addition, the diesel engine's loss of image is likely to have contributed to the hybrid boom; Environmentally conscious buyers in particular are likely to have switched to the alternative drive.
A total of 3.35 million new passenger cars were registered in Germany in 2016 (plus 5 percent). Of these, 1.75 million were equipped with a gasoline engine (plus 8.4 percent) and 1.54 million with a diesel engine (plus 0.1 percent). New plug-in hybrid vehicles were registered 13,755 times (plus 24 percent), and the number of new e-cars was 11,410 (minus 7.7 percent). (AG / SP-X)
