The agreement is perfect. The car manufacturer Opel will continue to build cars at its Bochum plant until the end of 2016. Instead, the employees forego the wage increases. However, a total of 700 jobs will be lost.
The car manufacturer Opel has reached an agreement with employee representatives to extend the exclusion of compulsory redundancies until the end of 2016. This means that cars will continue to be built at the Opel plant in Bochum up to this point. As the company announced on Thursday, they want to stick to the Bochum location after this date.
700 jobs are lost
“Opel wants to stay in Bochum. We want to keep our goods distribution center in Bochum. We want to secure a total of around 1200 collective-regulated Opel jobs in Bochum - and convert the location into a component plant,”said Opel supervisory board chairman Steve Girsky.
However, a total of 700 jobs will be lost. Starting in the second quarter, production in Bochum will be switched from three to two shifts. For the employees affected by this, “attractive severance payments and partial retirement programs” are to be offered, as stated in a company announcement. At the same time, the development company "Bochum Perspective 2022" is to be founded by the end of March, which will endeavor to attract new companies to the region.
In return for the agreement that has now been reached, the Opel employees will forego paying the wage increases until 2015 until the next wage increase comes into effect, as the general works council chairman Wolfgang Schäfer-Klug announced. "The crucial details of the future program will continue to be negotiated from Monday. We can only put it to our members to vote when the whole package is available," said Berthold Huber, first chairman of IG Metall, in Frankfurt.
Girsky speaks of a milestone
The other Opel locations in Rüsselsheim, Eisenach and Kaiserslautern can also look forward to a location guarantee. In Eisenach, where the Corsa and Adam are currently manufactured, two models will also be built after 2015. At the components plant in Kaiserslautern, plans will continue with around 1,800 employees after 2016 and Opel plans to produce a second model after 2015 at the main plant in Rüsselsheim.
As Opel announced, the Rüsselsheim development center will remain “an integral part of the international GM development network”. Girsky described the decision that has now been made "as a" milestone for Opel to break even again in the middle of the decade ". (AG / FM)
