Axles as a problem with TÜV

Parents who also care about driving and not just getting from A to B, to school and daycare, should like that. Less, however, that the Mazda 5 has a sore point: the axles. "Defeated bearings are the Achilles' heel," writes the "TÜV Report 2018". As early as the second general inspection (HU) when the vehicle was five years old, the rate of the defective copies was above the average of all checked-through cars.

The second shortcoming: the rusting exhaust system, which is also a serious issue from the second HU. Except for the brake discs, which are negative in the third and fourth mandatory checks, the Mazda 5 is a very reliable car. At least that is the picture he gives at the TÜV.

The ADAC judged the breakdown more negatively. The club rates this as below average. Contributing factors are: frequent defects in batteries built between 2007 and 2014, clogged particle filters (2007-09), damp spark plugs and striking starters in cars from 2008 and 2009. Problems with the injection nozzles (2011-12) also occurred significantly.

Long list of callbacks

And the list of callbacks is long. Most recently, in September 2016, over 210,000 cars made by the manufacturer from the end of 2008 to the end of 2015 had to be returned to the workshop because the tailgate lock could fail. The reason was failing gas pressure dampers. The back door of the Mazda5 could fall on your head.

Other reasons for the total of nine documented actions were incorrectly mounted engines, poorly screwed camshaft sensors with engines not starting, or problems with fuel pumps, passenger airbags, intercoolers or power steering.

Sliding doors as a trademark

The Mazda5 has not been available as a new car in Europe since 2015. The model was discontinued without replacement - at least in its segment, because the compact SUV CX-3 moved up. The van went on sale for the first time after its trade fair premiere at the Paris Salon in autumn 2004 in the following summer.

In addition to the sliding side doors, which could also be operated electrically with the 2007 facelift, its trademark was its third bench seat, which made the Mazda a seven-seater and thus suitable for large families. The facelift also brought revised engines. The second edition came to the dealerships in 2010, a little shorter than its predecessor, no less practical, but with a new entry-level diesel. It was optically revised again in 2013.

Small diesel with 115 hp

The small 1.6-liter diesel with / 115 PS replaced the diesel with 110 PS and 143 PS from two liters each, which power the first generation. As a gasoline engine, the Mazda offers between 115 hp and 150 hp from 1.8 and 2.0 liters of displacement, depending on the version. Depending on the engine, a six-speed manual switch or a five-speed automatic transmission ensures power transmission.

Although Mazda is well known for its willingness to experiment under the bonnet, customers in the van were only confronted with the conventional transverse four-cylinder engines. If you are looking for a 5 Series with the 1.6-liter diesel from a collaboration with PSA, you have to reckon with an average retail price of 7600 euros and a mileage of 120,000 kilometers for an MZ-CD from 2011. Deutsche Automobil Treuhand names these orientation values in its "DAT market mirror".

A larger, younger gasoline engine, such as the 2.0 MZR-DISI from 2015 with 150 hp, is listed there with at least 14,550 euros and 48,000 kilometers. For a 1.8 MZR with 115 PS from 2012, the DAT names 8250 euros and 87,000 kilometers as average values. (dpa)
