The S-Class also offers used comfort and high-quality workmanship. But especially the early vintages are not free from defects.

An S-Class is a status symbol and at the same time an automotive benchmark. Because the top model from Mercedes is not only an indication that the owner is on the road to success professionally and financially. In addition, the S-Class traditionally also stands for the respective top standards in automobile construction of its time. But as high as the quality of the luxury sedans from Stuttgart may be - even they are not perfect. Because in the ADAC breakdown statistics, like most other cars, the S-Class is represented with some possible defects.

Introduced in 1998

Most of the registered defects concern early models of the model generation introduced in 1998. In 1999 there were some broken belt pulleys on the crankshaft. The year 2001 stands for some defective diesel engines. Malfunctions in the engine management occurred with the gasoline engines in 1999, with the diesels it is the year 2000. In addition, there are occasional defective level controls and loosened and lost engine encapsulation in 1999. Inaccurate and defective fuel gauges also resulted in some breakdowns.

The still contemporary S-Class models include vehicles from the W140 series introduced in 1991. It was precisely these cars that initially fell into disrepute because of their sheer size - today they are rare and sought after on the used market, as many vehicles have been sold abroad. The W220 series was introduced in autumn 1998. It received a facelift in 2002 and was replaced in 2005 by the still current S-Class. The advantages of an S-Class consistently include a high level of comfort and high-quality workmanship - but quite high maintenance costs are also to be expected.

High driving level

The performance of the engines is at a high level corresponding to the vehicle class: The gasoline-powered generation built from 1998 onwards starts with 165 kW / 224 hp, with eight and twelve-cylinder engines with up to 368 kW / 500 hp at the top. Diesel engines with between 145 kW / 197 PS and 191 kW / 260 PS were available.

The prices for a used S-Class of the W220 series start at around 13,500 euros - according to the Schwacke list there is an S 430 from 1998. Around 20,500 euros have to be invested for an S 320 from 2002, a diesel model S 400 CDI from 2005 still costs just under 40,000 euros. (dpa / tmn)
