The Jeep Grand Cherokee has only a small fan base in Germany. Interested parties should be careful with first-generation used vehicles.

In Germany, the Jeep Cherokee has always been considered a fairly large off-road vehicle. But that wasn't big enough for the American manufacturer - and so he also brought the Grand Cherokee onto the market. But by European standards, it wasn't just the car itself that was quite large, the thirst of the V8 engines that were installed, among other things, was also beyond the usual order of magnitude. Used car buyers should also be aware that the first generation of the Grand Cherokee in particular did not do particularly well in the breakdown statistics of the ADAC in Munich.

Defective engines

The defects recorded are mainly related to engines. According to the automobile club, there were defects here between 1995 and 1998. Improved cylinder heads and a high-performance oil pump were later used to deal with the problems. Oil leaks in the four-cylinder diesel were also found. In 1997 the 2.5-liter turbo-diesels had defects in the fuel pump. The same problem existed with gasoline engines up to 1999. Also noticeable were torn and burst cooling hoses.

The first Jeep Grand Cherokee, developed on the basis of the smaller Cherokee, appeared on the market in 1993. In 1999 the second generation followed, which had only a few parts in common with the predecessor. Another model change took place in 2005, with the next Grand Cherokee expected in 2010.

Powerful engines, high consumption

The engine range leaves little to be desired, at least in terms of performance. Buyers should be aware, however, that the performance is usually bought at the cost of high consumption. Depending on the model and year of manufacture, the Grand Cherokee was available with a 130 kW / 177 hp six-cylinder as well as with V8 engines up to 313 kW / 426 hp. Diesel was available with 103 kW / 140 PS or 160 kW / 218 PS.

A used Grand Cherokee is quite cheap to buy - however, comparatively high maintenance costs can be expected. According to the Schwacke list, a Grand Cherokee 4.0 TSi from 1998 costs around 4,000 euros, a Grand Cherokee 4.7 Limited from 2005 costs around 16,000 euros. A 2007 diesel model Grand Cherokee 3.0 CRD Automatic DPF Limited should be available for 25,400 euros. (dpa / tmn)
