As a used car, the Citroen C4 Picasso is not at the top of the wish list. Younger models of the family van from France can, however, exert a certain charm.
Those looking for a family van might consider cars like the Opel Zafira or the VW Touran. If French elegance comes into play, the Citroën C4 Picasso is ideal. But the model also has solid features: For example, a huge storage space, and as an optional seven-seater it is in no way inferior to the German competition. In addition, the used prices are comparatively low.

But what price-conscious parents save on purchase, depending on the age of the vehicle, they may have to plan again for its maintenance. Because the C4 Picasso could be technically better. "Not perfect in terms of quality," noted the "TÜV Report 2018" on the Citroën model. However, with a gradation: "The younger Picasso puts his predecessor in the shade in terms of quality."
Deficiency rates above average
While criticism was only echoed beforehand, from a vehicle age of five years steering joints, axle springs and dampers also cause problems statistically in the main vehicle inspection (HU). The deficiency rates are above average. From this point on, the low beam is also adjusted or defective more than average. Similar complaints apply to the rear light. The drive shafts are therefore also a weak point for almost all years. And with advanced age, the emissions test also becomes a shortcoming.
Because customers in Germany mostly opt for German competing models, the local registration figures for the C4 Picasso are on a low level. The van does not appear officially in the ADAC breakdown statistics. But the club also found the model to be rather vulnerable. He speaks of values that tend to be below average.
Citroen C4 Picasso with modern infotainment since 2016
Accordingly, defective drive belts increased in specimens from 2014. Due to discharged batteries (2010) and problems with exhaust gas recirculation (2008 and 2009), the ADAC helpers had to go out quite often. The model has been recalled four times so far. The last time it had to be improved in 2011 due to the threat of failure of the brake assist system.
From 2006 to 2013 the first generation was on the market as a new car, initially as a version with a long wheelbase, from 2007 also in a shorter version. The second edition has been in stores since 2013 and received its facelift in 2016. Since then, infotainment, for example, has been modernized and dominated by Apple Carplay and Android Auto.
Lots of space in the family van
The model was able to score points in tests above all with the very large trunk, the good space or the fact that three child seats can be placed next to each other on the rear bench, which is possible with only a few cars. While the economy suffers mainly due to the high depreciation, the C4 Picasso offers good long-distance comfort. Depending on the version and generation, the van is between 4.43 meters and 4.60 meters long.
Under the bonnet you will find normal food consisting of four and three-cylinder engines with displacements of 1.2 to 2.0 liters. The smooth-running diesel engines generate 80 kW / 109 PS and 120 kW / 163 PS. The petrol engines produce 81 kW / 110 PS and 121 kW / 165 PS depending on the version and year of manufacture. Since the model update in 2016, a powerful and economical three-cylinder with 96 kW / 130 PS has been added to the range. A «Bioflex» version with 80 kW / 109 PS for operation with a gasoline-ethanol mixture was on offer from 2007 to 2008.
No bargain in sight
For a C4 Picasso 1.6 16V THP with 115 kW / 156 PS from 2011, the "DAT market mirror" of Deutsche Automobil Treuhand listed an average retail price of 8,250 euros depending on the version - with an average mileage of 97,000 kilometers. The same guide price therefore applies to the long version Grand Picasso.
A 2.0 BlueHDi of the second generation with 110 kW / 150 PS from 2013 is noted for at least 10,900 euros (87,000 kilometers). As the diesel of the first edition, the 1.6 eHDI 110 FAP with start-stop system and 82 kW / 112 PS was traded for 8,650 euros (103,000 kilometers) from 2012. (dpa / tmn)
