The predecessor caused quite a few worries for its owners. But the Peugeot 407 has put the technical deficiencies aside and presents itself as extremely inconspicuous in the breakdown statistics of the ADAC.

Mid-range sedans are not only built by Audi, Opel or Volkswagen. But although there are a variety of corresponding models on the market, no importer has been able to match the success of the local brands. At Peugeot, too, they keep trying to raise sales figures with new model ideas. And so the moderately successful 406 got a successor with the 407. It can at least make progress: In the breakdown statistics of the ADAC it is much less noticeable than its predecessor.

Reliable limousine

In the Peugeot 406, the list of possible defects was still noticeably long: Sometimes it was water in the trunk, sometimes it was door seals on the sill that were damaged when getting in and out. Warped or worn brake discs, rattling doors and rust were also registered. The situation is different with the 407: According to the automobile club in Munich, it is a reliable mid-range sedan. There were occasional malfunctions in the engine management of the diesel versions. Discharged batteries were noticed quite often.

The Peugeot 406 appeared on the market in 1995 and was built until 2004. The successor 407 came to dealers in spring 2004. In addition to the sedans, station wagons and coupes of the series were also offered. The 406 station wagon came in early 1997, the 407 station wagon like the sedan in 2004. The 406 coupe, in turn, came in the same year as the station wagon. With the 407, customers had to wait for the two-door model until autumn 2005.

The gasoline engines of the 406 develop 65 kW / 89 PS or up to 152 kW / 207 PS in the models with a 3.0-liter V6. The 407 starts with 85 kW / 116 PS. Here, too, there is a six-cylinder with a three-liter displacement, the output is 155 kW / 211 PS. The diesels in 406 and 407 are available with 66 kW / 90 PS to 150 kW / 204 PS depending on the year of construction.

A simple Peugeot 406 SL from 1997 is now available for 1500 euros, according to the Schwacke list. The prices of the successor start at around 7850 euros - there is a 407 115 Esplanade from 2004. A diesel station wagon 407 SW HDi 135 Sport from 2007 should be available for 15,550 euros. (dpa / tmn)
