The Mitsubishi Galant is an insider tip on the used car market. The elegant mid-range sedan is not free from defects.

Japanese automakers have an almost traditional reputation for building cars with a rather boring design. Mitsubishi has worked hard on this image. However, it is often forgotten that Mitsubishi in particular had a mid-range model in its range for a long time, which for many years was characterized by sporty chic combined with a certain elegance. Today the series with the name Galant is considered an insider tip on the used market - even if the cars are not always free of defects according to ADAC breakdown statistics.

Good workmanship

In principle, according to the Munich car club, interested parties should ensure that the timing belt has been changed every 90,000 kilometers. It is also known that batteries and generators have a disproportionately high tendency to stop working. With older models, increased steering play is sometimes noticeable. In the years of construction 1997 and 1998 there were relatively frequent defects in the automatic transmissions. Other deficiencies include unevenly pulling hand brakes, worn brake discs, and rusted and “seized” brakes on the rear axle.

The generation of the Mitsubishi Galant currently most frequently found on the second-hand market appeared in 1997 as a notchback sedan and a station wagon. The series was discontinued at the end of 2003. Good workmanship, a decent amount of space and good handling are named as advantages.

The engine range for the Galant series from 1997 begins with a four-cylinder with 100 kW / 136 hp and a displacement of 2.0 liters. The upper limit is a six-cylinder with a displacement of 2.5 liters and 120 kW / 163 PS. A special feature in the engine range are the gasoline engines with direct injection that Mitsubishi introduced at an early stage.

According to the Schwacke list, a used Mitsubishi Galant 2000 GLS from 1997 should be available today for around 4400 euros. A six-cylinder model 2500 V6-24 Avance from 1999 costs around 5800 euros. For a station wagon Galant 2.4 GDI Avance with direct injection engine from 2003 around 10,600 euros are required. (dpa / gms)
