Users of the car sharing service Car2go can also open the vehicles with their smartphones instead of the membership card. At the same time Stockholm will be the 30th location of the Daimler subsidiary.

Customers of the Car2go car sharing offer can now open the 12,000 vehicles in the fleet that are currently in use with their smartphones instead of the membership card. “We are consistently implementing the role of the smartphone as a key technology. I always have my smartphone with me - it means I can rent my Car2go even more easily and quickly than before, "said" said the managing director of Car2go Europe GmbH, Thomas Beermann.

Car2go is active in eight countries

As the Daimler subsidiary announced at the same time, the 30th Car2go location will open in the Swedish capital Stockholm from December. 100 Smart Fortwo will be in use there at the beginning, before the fleet is to be expanded to 250 vehicles in the first quarter. Thanks to a new generation of telematics - similar to Car2go black - the vehicles used in Stockholm can only be opened using a smartphone.

With the car2go app, almost the entire rental process, from finding and reserving to opening the vehicle, can be handled using the smartphone. Confirmation of the absence of damage, assessment of the cleanliness of the vehicle and starting the engine must also be carried out via the touchscreen of the vehicle, while the rental end takes place automatically after a 15-second countdown. For a transitional period, the rental can also be made with the membership card before it is completely replaced by the smartphone.

Starting in Sweden, Car2go is currently active in eight countries and has more than 900,000 customers. Those responsible are hoping for a million customers this year. (AG / FM)
