At the Geneva Motor Show, Kia gave an outlook on a sporty offshoot for the B segment. According to the manufacturer, the Provo is "more than a design exercise".
The name alone is a challenge. With the Provo, Kia gives an outlook on a sporty representative in the B segment and sends greetings to the small GTI, Cupra or RS models in advance with the study. Because although the only 3.88 meter short speedster was unveiled as a concept car at the Geneva Motor Show, it is supposed to represent more than a pure design exercise. "It is a self-confident and purposeful statement for dynamism and energy, which should bring a new kind of driving pleasure to the B-segment", says Gregory Guillaume, chief designer at the European Kia design center in Frankfurt.
Kia Provo as a smaller version of American muscle cars
The appearance does not allow any other conclusions to be drawn. As a smaller version of the American muscle cars, the Provo can be viewed with its compact construction. Kia speaks of a simple and at the same time powerful exterior design. The only question is where the simplicity comes to light.
A steep front with a large mouth and small LED headlights also ensure an aggressive appearance, as do the elongated hood and the short rear with adjustable diffuser.
Kia Provo with an electric motor on the rear axle
The term "simple" is also out of the question when it comes to motorization. The small car has 204 hp available, which the Provo receives via a 1.6-liter turbo GDI petrol engine, which is also supported by an electric motor mounted on the rear axle. At low speeds, the Provo can move purely electrically. At the same time, Kia's first dual-clutch transmission celebrates its premiere in the Provo.
Kia speaks of the fact that a production version is not planned. However, this was already said when Pro Ceed was a student. With the Pro Ceed GT, the Koreans have even gone one step further. The former study will also celebrate its world premiere in Geneva - and will go on sale across Europe in mid-2013. (AG / TF)
