The VW Passat is a classic company car. But now the mid-range model is also becoming interesting for private customers. As a used car, however, it has defects.

2014 was a new beginning for the Passat series. With the introduction of the B8, the mid-range classic was based on the modular transverse matrix (MQB) for the first time. The offer is huge. In addition, despite its moderate grades in the TÜV report, it promises endurance qualities and a lot of modern technology.

The Passat's specialty is long tours, on which the Wolfsburg's latest version spoils the occupants with more space than ever. There is ample room for development in the front and in the back. The mighty cardan tunnel alone restricts the foot space for rear passengers. In this respect, the Passat remains a 4 + 1 seater, regardless of whether it is an exotic sedan or a popular station wagon. The trunk, especially when it comes to the station wagon, is beyond any doubt with 650 to 1780 liters. So he is well equipped for tours with children and adults.

Good standard equipment

But the Passat B8 is not just the typical sales representative's vehicle, if the previous owner has invested a little, it can also be a luxury liner. Whether electric tailgate, massage seats, heated windscreen or automatic transmission - the market for options is large. This also applies to the many assistance systems that regulate the high beam, recognize traffic signs, brake automatically or assist with maneuvering with a trailer.

As usual with the Passat, the B8 also offers a wide range of drives. Over the five-year construction period to date, there are a total of nine petrol engines with an output range of 125 hp to 280 hp. Many of the gasoline engines were offered as standard or as an option with dual clutch transmission and all-wheel drive. With the gasoline engines, both economical and performance-oriented natures will find what they are looking for.

At the upper limit, the two-liter gasoline engine lures you with a top speed of 250 km / h, although the small gasoline engine 1.4 TSI with 125 hp can do. The sprint with the basic engine takes less than 10 seconds, with a maximum of over 200 possible. In return, the 1.4er is content with around five liters of standard consumption.

Diesel popular with the Passat

The diesels that are still popular on the Passat are even more efficient. Despite general skepticism about diesel, a good three-quarters of all used B8s are offered with diesel engines, of which there are four performance variants. The small 1.6 TDI, which can get by with less than four liters, is recommended to save money. The 2.0 TDI with lush 240 hp needs around five and a half liters, which spoils left-lane friends on the autobahn with all-round pulling power and speed of 240. The optimal and particularly common compromise is the 2.0 TDI, which with its 110 kW / 150 PS can be moved quickly and efficiently.

Alternatively, the Passat is also available as a plug-in hybrid GTE, which is primarily powered by a gasoline engine, but can alternatively also be powered by an electric drive. The latter allows up to 50 kilometers of emission-free driving thanks to an almost 10 kWh battery. In addition, the GTE offers a high level of performance, which unfortunately also applies to the used prices.

5 stars at EuroNCAP

In the EuroNCAP crash test, the Passat achieved an impeccable five-star result. As already mentioned, the mid-range model is also a very modern car in terms of the assistance systems. Recommended extras include the cruise control, LED matrix lights and rear parking beeper. The basic Trendline already offers some comforts, but it only becomes attractive from the Comfortline version. If you like it particularly elegant, you should look for variants with highline equipment.

If you look at the results in the current TÜV report, the Passat B8 does not cut a particularly good figure. The proportion of vehicles without defects is lower than the segment average. However, the average mileage of the vehicles examined is well above the mileage that is usual in the segment.

Inexpensive as a used car

Especially since in many cases these are company cars in continuous use, which are rarely driven in a manner that is gentle on the material. Accordingly, used copies with high mileage are often offered amazingly cheap, but these are likely to show increased wear in some points. A precise inspection of the chassis components and brakes is recommended here. Otherwise, however, the Passat B8 is considered to be rock solid, as proven by at least various endurance tests over 100,000 or even 150,000 kilometers, in which the long-term quality of the Passat B8 was consistently rated “very good”.

Spacious, technically up to date and with good endurance qualities, the VW Passat B8 is an all-round attractive car for the family. You can find well-equipped specimens with moderate mileage for around 15,000 euros. If you are not afraid of high mileage, you will find some used B8s even at four-digit prices. In both cases, you get a lot of car for your money. The quality is also right here. (SP-X)
