It was the summer of last year. There, whether consciously or unconsciously, Volvo managed a PR coup. Because at that time the Swedes let it be known that from 2019 they will offer every new model with an electric motor.

“This announcement means the end of cars powered exclusively by internal combustion engines,” said Volvo boss Hakan Samuelsson at the time. After this press conference, the public got the impression that Volvo will be a purely electric brand from then on.

Half of sales from 2025 will continue to be combustion engines

But that's not the case. Of course, the Swedes continue to offer combustion engines - including diesel. There will be no short-term farewell to diesel, even if Volvo does not pump any more money into this technology. So when it comes to electromobility, at least, Volvo is not as progressive as parts of the public have perceived the company since that day in July last year.

But the Swedes know how to keep talking again and again. So also this Wednesday at the auto show in Beijing. Volvo then announced that every Volvo sold after 2025 will have an electric drive. That is more than the German manufacturers are planning for this year. Here BMW, Daimler and Audi always talk about wanting to generate 15 to 25 percent of their total sales with electric vehicles by then. Now it remains to be seen whether the Swedes will achieve this goal.

In any case, the company announced in a press release that the announcement from 2017 would be concretized to offer either a mild hybrid, a plug-in hybrid or a purely battery-electric vehicle in each new series from next year. “Last year we committed to electrification in order to prepare for the era after classic combustion engines,” explained Volvo boss Håkan Samuelsson. “Today we are strengthening and expanding this commitment in the world's largest market for electrified vehicles. China's electric future is also the electric future of Volvo Cars."

China is the world's most important market for electromobility. The Chinese government plans that from 2024 every fifth vehicle sold will have an alternative drive. With its “Made in China 2025” strategy, the country wants to achieve global market leadership in ten industries, including e-mobility.

Volvo, which is part of the Chinese Geely Group, does not currently have a single all-electric vehicle on offer. With the S90 and the S90 L, the premium manufacturer is already producing two plug-in hybrids in China. Production of the XC60 T8 Twin Engine is scheduled to start this week. This means that plug-in hybrid or electric cars would soon be built in the three Chinese Volvo plants in Luqiao, Chengdu and Daqing. China is the largest single market for the Scandinavians. More than 100,000 vehicles were sold here in the previous year.
