Peugeot has presented the new 3008. The French SUV is an eye-catcher - from the outside as well as from the inside. But the customer looks in vain for an all-wheel drive.

The first sight is a surprise: Not that Peugeot is known for boring design, but this new, French SUV is a really cool statement on the future direction of the Peugeot design language. Even if there will be no all-wheel drive. Nothing is known about prices yet, but they should start at around 25,000 euros. You still have to get used to the model lettering on the tailgate of this angularly styled all-rounder - yes, but we're actually talking about the 3008, the previously almost indefinable crossover.

Right now this will finally end up here. Especially since the SUV business is still booming and, according to market analysts, will be buzzing for a long time. The future 3008, with a height of around 1.62 meters, is no longer legged than its predecessor. However, it has become around 8 centimeters longer, which makes it appear more elongated and less chubby.

Unconventional ideas

It is also nice that the interior can deliver what the outer skin promises. For a certain equipment line, the interior designers even came up with something unconventional and installed a kind of fleece as decor. In this case, there are also armchairs with the same fabric, which gives the interior a stylish touch. As a contrast to the retro-inspired chairs, the instruments are fully digital for the first time at Peugeot.

Numerous configuration options allow the driver to live out their individual information needs.

The electronic road map has recently moved right in front of the observer's eyes (if he wants to) without having to take his eyes off the road. The navigation system now comes from TomTom and no longer from Magnetti Marelli, certainly not a disadvantage. There is a futuristic-looking selector lever to match the living area, provided you are in an automatic version. Peugeot is still sticking to the concept with the small steering wheel: The rim is now even a little flatter than on the 2008 and 308, which improves the view of the speedometer.

A lot is said to have improved on the 3008. If you believe Michel Graber, who is responsible for the acoustics, the future all-rounder is, for example, a significantly quieter car than its predecessor. An optimized exhaust pipe, improved insulation materials and a revised engine mounting should help to lower the noise level and nip vibrations in the bud. Aeroacoustically refined exterior mirrors do the rest.

The vehicle should now also be lighter, as it is based on the new EMP2 platform. The assistance systems of the 3008 want to be modern: for the first time in the brand's history, an active cruise control with braking function will be used. The technicians also provide the customer with an active lane keeping system that is able to make steering corrections automatically. As a fun and useful gimmick, there will be a small electric scooter for 1,190 euros (plus 320 euros for the docking station), which you can simply take out of the trunk when driving in areas with limited access and then close in front of the door of your favorite shop in the pedestrian zone drive.

When it comes to engines, it stays with old friends for the time being. Supercharged three-cylinder with a displacement of 1.2 liters in the output level of 81 kW / 110 PS and 96 kW / 130 PS plus the 1.6-liter four-cylinder (121 kW / 165 PS) are supposed to make the petrol group happy, while they are also good BlueHDI units with a performance range from 74 kW / 100 PS to 132 kW / 180 PS are expected to meet with approval from diesel enthusiasts. As a surprise, another engine (top model) will later join the drive range, but Peugeot has not yet commented on it. A plug-in hybrid, however, will arrive just as safely in about a year and a half as the eight-speed automatic (currently only six stages), as the product manager for the 3008, Marion David, announced.

Incidentally, the 3008, which appears quite spacious when you first try it out, will no longer have a third row of seats, which is supposed to attract corresponding customers to the 5008. For this, the knee room in the rear has grown nominally by 2.5 centimeters to make traveling more comfortable, especially for long-legged people. To what extent this succeeds, later driving tests will have to clarify. In any case, the young Frenchman looks promising. (SP-X)
