The Toyota Aygo is an ideal city vehicle. Anyone interested in the little Japanese as a used car will not make a bad choice.

Toyota's second generation Aygo has been on the market for around five years. Accordingly, there are already a large number of used copies at low prices. Vehicles with a high mileage are offered for less than 5000 euros. After all, for this money you get a technically modern, likeable small car that is considered solid even with a few years under your belt.

Although the new Aygo is much more stylish than its predecessor, it is still an undiminished short car dwarf. Among other things, this has advantages when looking for a parking space, because with a length of 3.46 meters, small gaps are sufficient and the turning circle is also modest at 9.6 meters. At the front, the Aygo still offers sufficient leg and headroom. At the back it becomes more cozy, if not dramatically tight.

Expectably small trunk

The trunk is really small, with 168 liters enough for two compact trolleys in an upright position. Thanks to the foldable rear seat back, the storage space can grow to over 800 liters. The Aygo II can be obtained with two or four entry doors. Anyone traveling with small children should look out for copies with rear doors, as the additional portals make it easier to fasten the seat belt. In terms of quality and equipment, you shouldn't make too high demands. Despite even chic details in places, the Aygo remains an all-round cost-optimized car.

Modesty is also the order of the day with the drives. Actually there is only one one-liter three-cylinder, but it is now available in two power levels. The first four years of construction it was 69 hp, since the facelift in summer 2018 the petrol engine has developed 72 hp. In both cases, the propulsion is just as modest as the consumption, which according to Toyota should be around four liters. In practice, you will burn one liter more. If you don't feel like switching work, you can also get the Aygo with automatic. However, this variant is a rarity on the used market.

X-Play good alternative

The basic equipment of every Aygo includes ESP, six airbags and projection lights. A more attractive alternative to the otherwise spartan basic model is the X-Play Touch version, ideally supplemented by the X-Smart package, which in addition to the X-Touch infotainment system with 7-inch touchscreen also includes automatic air conditioning.

Despite the large number of airbags, the Aygo is not a model student when it comes to safety. In the EuroNCAP crash test in 2017, the simple variant was only awarded three stars. If the Safety Sense safety package is on board, a collision avoidance is included, which EuroNCAP rewarded with an extra star.

So far, inconspicuous at TÜV

So far, the Aygo II has been considered inconspicuous in terms of long-term quality and susceptibility to errors. Similar to its predecessor, the current generation also comes with an average error rate through the TÜV tests. Only lighting and brakes cause more frequent problems. The breakdown statistics of the ADAC show the Toyota as a safe bank.

Anyone looking for a cheap and modern automobile for the city is well served with the Toyota Aygo II. The used prices have already reached a mid-four-digit level, which makes it a thoroughly attractive option in the small car segment in view of its long-term qualities. (SP-X)
