The Kia Stinger is an announcement. The Koreans sports car not only looks good, but also offers excellent driving performance.
The most important mission of the Kia Stinger sports sedan is very clear: to develop charisma and convey the strength of the Korean brand to classic Ceed buyers. It doesn't need a lot of sales for that, instead a mere presence in the showroom between all the bread and butter cars is enough. However, the sleek four-door is far too good to be a pure eye-catcher.
The coupé-like Korean is a real eye-catcher. The design team led by the German Peter Schreyer has found a good balance between a thick-cheeked appearance and genteel restraint: fake air inlets on the bonnet and gills behind the front wheels appeal to the HP group, while the harmonious proportions of the 4.83-meter-long hatchback sedan are also pleasing do well in the board car park.
Spacious interior in the Stinger
The very spacious interior is more elegant than sporty, a lot of leather (standard), an overall high-quality selection of materials and their careful workmanship create an almost luxurious atmosphere. Despite an abundance of electronic functions, the interior does not seem overloaded - the typical Kia style, which dispenses with any kind of frills and focuses on usability, also works in the upper price segment.
The Kia also has plenty of space to offer. Especially at the front, where the not very spacious center console is particularly noticeable. In the back, long-legged people sit just as comfortably, but the giants of the seat quickly hit the coupé-like roof. The trunk under the tailgate that swings open is also spacious, even if it lacks a bit of packing height due to the concept. The Stinger is therefore not the ideal car for the big vacation tour with four or five people. However, a shooting brake version of the sedan is not planned.
Apart from that, the Korean has long-distance qualities in abundance. The chassis manages the balancing act between travel comfort and agility, the sensitive steering makes both cornering and stubborn straight ahead on the motorway a pleasure. There are also grippy, easily controllable brakes. In addition to a limited slip differential, the tested V6 variant also comes with all-wheel drive technology as standard and normally distributes the drive power slightly at the rear.
When you press the sports button, a few percent more migrate to the rear axle, the gas pedal reacts more sensitively and the adaptive dampers tighten a little. The Kia becomes even more pointed in "Sport +" mode, which also leaves the ESP anti-skid system significantly more leash.
Sport is not necessary in everyday life: The Stinger is extremely handy even in standard mode, given its length and weight. And of course sovereign - which is mainly due to the 3.3 liter six-cylinder, which develops 366 hp and 510 Nm torque. As the data suggest, the turbo gasoline engine has no problems whatsoever with the almost two-ton four-wheel drive and, in conjunction with the comfort-oriented eight-speed automatic, takes it from standstill to 100 km / h in 5.5 seconds.
Top speed at 270 km / h
His work is accompanied by a sonorous hum full of character, which despite electronic amplification never seems intrusive. A maximum of 270 km / h are possible in the Stinger, leaving most of the electronically sealed off competition from Germany behind.
The only downer: When it comes to efficiency, the Korean is lagging behind the competition. It is true that the 10.5 liter standard consumption recommended by the manufacturer can almost be achieved under good conditions and with careful driving. However, if you want to use the engine's potential - not even exhaust it - you have to reckon with 12 liters plus x. This is not up to date, even in view of the driving performance.
Starting price at 55,900 euros
What you pay at the gas station, you save elsewhere. With a starting price of 55,900 euros, the Stinger is the most expensive current Kia on the German market, but compared to a similarly motorized BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé (just under 60,000 euros) or Audi S5 Sportback (just under 60,000 euros) it is almost a bargain.
Especially when you factor in the almost complete equipment and the seven-year guarantee. Nevertheless, it will primarily encourage Ceed buyers to choose their brand. However, if you have a sense for the advantages of a sports sedan with strong driving performance and do not value the prestigious labels of German premium manufacturers, you should ask the dealer for a test drive with the exhibit. The Stinger is far too good to just stare at. (SP-X)
