Diesel scandal or no diesel scandal: Audi relies on the power of the diesel engine and is now bringing the SQ5 onto the road with a lot of power.
As with the brand's other S models, Audi is again relying on diesel power for the SQ5. After the second generation of the mid-range SUV, which has been available since 2017, initially with a 340 hp TFSI as an S version, the power athlete is now returning to its roots from the first generation: a powerful diesel.

The decision in favor of a compression-ignition engine is astonishing in view of the discussions about the diesel drive, especially since the Ingolstadt-based company, with its manipulated engines, has played a major role in the increasing skepticism about the fuel-efficient drive. But it is precisely the consumption advantage and the associated CO2 emissions advantage compared to gasoline-powered vehicles that is the reason to bring the diesel back into focus in view of the strict and even more stringent EU requirements. After all, customers who are well off or have a large company car budget and are hungry for performance should continue to be convinced.
Six-cylinder with 347 hp
First a look at the technical data: The three-liter six-cylinder has an output of 347 hp. The standard sprint takes 5.1 seconds, the top speed is limited to 250 km / h, the power is transmitted via an eight-speed automatic. The permanent all-wheel drive called “quattro” by Audi is part of it ex works, including a self-locking center differential.
Audi gives average fuel consumption between 6.6 and 6.8 liters, which corresponds to CO2 emissions of 172 to 177 g / km. Compared to the previous petrol range, this is a reduction of around 20 grams. The comparatively good standard values are made possible, among other things, by using a 48-volt system that is also used to operate a belt starter generator. This enables an efficient start-stop system with a sailing function and good recuperation.
The lush torque can also be seen as a further reason for the diesel. It is available between 2500 and 3100 revolutions. So that there is no turbo lag, the V6 unit has, in addition to the conventional exhaust gas turbocharger, an electric compressor that kicks in when the exhaust gas-powered charger does not yet have enough pressure.
SQ5 goes wild
That’s the theory. The driver notices little of the sophisticated technology and somehow also notices a lot. The fact that a technical ballet takes place under the hood happens discreetly in the background. The driver, on the other hand, feels the effect very precisely. Torque is already available with the first slight movement of the accelerator foot. There is no trace of exertion, turbo lag, or even just small holes. You have to be more careful to keep the horses in the city traffic or on limited stretches in check and within the road traffic regulations, even with a light touch of the accelerator pedal.
Clearly: They don't want to play, they want to gallop wildly. Fortunately, during the first test drives there was the opportunity to test the engine's spontaneous response behavior, the extremely powerful torque and the successful suspension set-up in the winding and little-traveled terrain. Unproblematic and fast load changes, directional stability and a fast-acting automatic make it easy to hurry through bends, even if you are particularly pleased with the good sports seats with a lot of lateral support. At this point you hardly notice that you are sitting in a 2-ton SUV and not in a flat sports car.
No rolling movements can be made out either. If you register a slightly greenish or pale discoloration on the front passenger's face, it probably helps to switch from the hard-tuned sport mode to the comfort position. The different settings are clearly noticeable - and also audible. If a rich, artificially generated and V8-like booming sound penetrates the interior during the sporty tightening, the ears of the occupants are spared in comfort mode.
High consumption included
Regardless of which mode you are in, you should be a little hardened when you look at the on-board computer. The standard value is clearly missed, even when strolling leisurely. A high eight is displayed; Routes driven with sporty ambition ensure a double-digit flow rate (10.2 liters, with an increasing tendency) of the fuel.
You should also be tough when studying the price list. The SQ5, which is available from 67,750 euros, is neatly equipped with 20-inch aluminum, a striking front apron, mirror housing in aluminum look, leather sports seats and an electrically opening and closing tailgate, but there is still plenty of opportunity for further editions.
The virtual cockpit, navigation system, matrix light or the heating for the front and rear seats, for example, cause extra costs just like metallic paint. It's just a shame that the interior is not completely convincing. The use of a lot of hard plastic that can be seen and felt does not match the claim and the corresponding prices. The inlays in aluminum are of little use, especially since when you feel it you ask yourself whether it is actually metal or just plastic. (SP-X)
