Do you need such a car? Audi has decided the question for itself and is now bringing a sport version of its luxury SUV onto the market with the SQ8.

In the past, cars were either spacious or manageable, sporty or economical, but today's models should ideally combine all of these capabilities. The latest candidate for the I-can't-make-up customer base: the Audi SQ8 TDI. As an SUV coupé already a compromise between off-road, spacious and chic, the S model also strives to be a veritable athlete.

And so that the fuel bill does not skyrocket, there is no sophisticated Otto engine under the large hood, but a relatively economical diesel. The SQ8 is still not suitable for penny pinchers, Audi charges at least 102,900 euros for the heavy humming, available from late summer.

Grille with silver frame

To make the normal Q8 look like an S sports car, Audi decorates the large radiator grille with a matt silver frame and also paints the underride guard and mirror flaps in the same color; The new exhaust system with four tailpipes as thick as an arm demonstrates the power potential even more clearly. The SQ8 is standard on large 21-inch models, and if you like, you can add another inch. Inside, it is above all the taut, tightly packed sports seats that characterize the S model, and the red-gray interior. Audi installs brushed aluminum decor ex works, carbon or real wood is optionally available.

The Zierrats looks good on the SQ8, no question about it, but in the end it's all about the engine: four liters of displacement, double turbo-charging and an additional, electrically driven compressor (EPC) generate steam, develop 435 hp and work between them 1,250 and 3,250 revolutions of 900 Newton meters of torque on the crankshaft. It not only sounds impressive, it feels like it too.

In 4.8 seconds to 100 km / h

The diesel engine pushes hard at the cavalier start, pushes the guests firmly into their seats and after just 4.8 seconds SQ8 drivers risk a parking ticket on the country road. Of course there are cars that outperform the Audi in the standard sprint, but these rarely weigh more than two tons.

But although Audi has finely choreographed the supercharger ballet - only one turbo is active below 2200 rpm, then the second switches on and when starting and accelerating, the EPC compresses with its compressor wheel, which is powered by an electric motor in 250 milliseconds to 70,000 rpm is brought, the intake air is even stronger - there is a tiny little delay when you step on the gas spontaneously; It remains to be seen whether it is due to the engine or the standard eight-speed automatic.

Opted for belt starter generator

An integrated starter generator (ISG) could have helped, which sends its boost power directly to the crankshaft. Instead, as part of the mild hybridization (MHEV) of the V8 diesel - without this extra, the engine is also used in the SQ7 TDI - Audi has opted for a belt starter generator (RSG), which hardly provides any extra power, but rather serves much more for recuperation and thus to save fuel.

With up to 8 kW, energy is recovered when decelerating and between 55 and 160 km / h the SQ8 can even coast for a while with the engine switched off; The RSG takes over the restarting of the eight-cylinder almost unnoticed. Overall, Audi expects the new MHEV technology to reduce fuel consumption by half a liter per 100 kilometers. It is unlikely that the sporty diesel SUV coupé will actually only dispose of the estimated 7.5 liters of fuel in the end.

Excellent chassis included

After all, it is not just too much fun to get the engine to roar again and again with a powerful thrust of gas. In addition, there are the standard tightening of the chassis in the S model, which does not exactly encourage a resource-saving pace: The adaptive air suspension noticeably tightens the substructure in sport mode and, together with the active roll stabilization, which like the electrically driven compressor and the mild hybrid Component that uses the 48-volt electrical system for phenomenal road holding.

The all-wheel drive guarantees that the power comes exactly to the axle where it is needed and the all-wheel steering makes the five-meter ship seem to shrink by at least 50 centimeters - you could think that the engineers have overridden the physics. However, you will be brought back to reality if you take a curve too fast on the narrow Pyrenees roads. Then suddenly the force pushes against the outer edge and the driver realizes that a high seat is not a thoroughbred sports car after all. (SP-X)
