It doesn't always have to be a VW Golf. If you are looking for a good used car in the compact class, you should also look at the Peugeot 308.

After all, it doesn't always have to be a VW Golf, Opel Astra or Ford Focus. A used Peugeot 308 of the first generation (2007 to 2015) can also convince in the compact class. However, buyers should be aware of its notorious weaknesses during the general inspection.

The most striking external features of the Peugeot 308 are the shark-mouth radiator grille, the strongly modeled bonnet nose and the slightly stepped rear of the sedans (three- and five-door). Despite the design extravagance, the Peugeot is a compact car in the best sense of the word, offers good space with manageable dimensions, drives safely, comfortably and, if desired, even fast. The very spacious "SW" station wagon, which is even available as a seven-seater, is particularly popular.

Seats are removable

Removable armchairs in the rear and the optional panoramic glass roof are further specialties of the French. The fourth body variant is a four-seater convertible (308 CC) with the steel folding roof that was popular at the time. Technically closely related is also the rarely offered coupé model RCZ.

The drive range of the 308 is exceptionally wide. In the gasoline engine range, the 1.4 and 1.6 liter four-cylinder models range from 95 hp to 200 hp in the turbocharged GTi model. The diesels are 1.6 or 2.0 liters and cover a range from 90 hp to 163 hp. In total, interested parties can choose between 16 engine variants. The portfolio of transmissions is smaller; automatic systems are usually only available for the more powerful engines; In addition to a contemporary six-speed box, there is also an aged four-speed variant that drives up consumption.

The automated manual transmission takes getting used to - some customers are annoyed by the noticeable interruption in tractive power. Problems are mainly caused by the 1.6 HDI, which is known for turbocharger damage, and the camshaft sensors on gasoline engines. Many 308s are also noticed by TÜV due to loss of oil and failed emissions tests.

Basic model without air conditioning

Equipment and safety: As was common at the time, the base models of the 308 sedan and station wagon were still offered without air conditioning. For this reason alone, you should reach at least the second highest level ("Tendance"). The convertible was much better equipped in all variants, so that the variants without purchased extras are also attractive. The "Airwave" neck heating, which is supposed to make open-top driving more comfortable in moderate outside temperatures, is unusual. For all variants there is also a full leather interior and xenon light - not always common in this class. There were always seven airbags on board - including an air cushion for the knee - and an ESP. In the Euro NCAP crash test, the 308 made it to five stars in 2009.

New car buyers are likely to have been annoyed by the record number of recalls for the 308, those interested in used cars can easily see that, but should check their participation. Among other things, it was about the main brake cylinder and a leaky diesel line. In addition, there are the mentioned problems with the engines, and during the general inspection, many 308s with bad brakes were also noticed.

Mediocre picture in the TÜV report

All in all, the Frenchman only gives a mediocre picture in the current TÜV report. After all, the problems of the predecessor with unstable steering joints have apparently been resolved.

Conclusion: The Peugeot 308 is a successful compact car, especially the very spacious station wagon with its optional third row of seats is worth a recommendation. However, buyers should take a close look at their dream car so that unexpected repairs do not drive up costs. Due to its mediocre reputation in terms of quality and advanced age, the Frenchman is comparatively cheap to buy, starting at around 2000 euros. (SP-X)
