The Mazda 2 is getting ready for a new chapter in life. With a comprehensive facelift, it should arouse the customers' interest in buying.
The Mazda 2, which has been available since 2015, has not only received the usual retouching at the front and rear, but also more assistants and new front seats. In addition, the Japanese have streamlined the range of engines and have also added a six-speed automatic converter as an alternative to the standard six-speed manual transmission for the 90 hp petrol engine. It starts now from 14,190 euros for the basic version with 75 hp, that is 800 euros more than before.

Two engine expansion stages of the 1.5-liter naturally aspirated petrol must be enough. The previous top unit with 115 hp is history, Mazda is content with the 75 and 90 hp variants. The company assumes that over 90 percent of customers in Germany will opt for the more powerful unit. Where other manufacturers rely on three-cylinder with turbo for small cars, Mazda is loyal to the four-cylinder in this segment as well and completely dispenses with turbo support.
Plenty of switching work in demand
The 90 hp vacuum cleaner and its not exactly lush 148 Nm maximum torque also require a lot of manual work to be kept in a good mood. Even slight inclines require a grip on the gear lever to shift down at least one gear. The standard six-speed gearbox implements the processes easily, nothing sticks or looks doughy.
If the driver indulges in shifting pleasure, the Mazda 2 really gets out of hand. The standard sprint can be achieved in just under 10 seconds and the top speed is 183 km / h. These are not record-breaking values, but should be enough for most users.
With mild hybrid system
To optimize consumption, Mazda uses a simple mild hybrid system for both units, which consists of a belt-driven, integrated starter generator (B-ISG) and a capacitor that serves as a power storage unit. The average consumption according to WLTP for both engines is 5.3 liters in the technical data, which corresponds to CO2 emissions of 120 g / km.
When driving, the non-existent purring of a three-cylinder is positively noticeable - in general, the Japanese have improved the noise insulation: You can't hear much from the engine. The suspension comfort is okay, but the chassis doesn't like short bumps even after the revision. The new seats provide good support, but their contact surface could be longer.
The interior looks tidy and functional. You will look in vain for colorful color schemes or blatant color combinations. The space available in the 4.07 meter long vehicle is okay, as is the trunk volume (250 - 950 liters). As with many small cars, folding down the rear seat backrests creates a step. On the positive side, the steering wheel can be adjusted both in height and in depth. The glove compartment could open a little less abruptly when opened.
Six-speed automatic on offer
Mazda is also taking an unusual approach with the alternative to the manual switch. Instead of the CVT or double clutch transmissions that are common in this segment, the 90 hp variant has a six-speed automatic transmission. However, there is no mild hybrid support here. Interested parties have to invest around 20,100 euros for this engine-gearbox combination, which is only available in the second-highest equipment level "Exclusive Line".
As is now common in the small car segment, customers can order almost everything for the five-door model that is also common in higher vehicle classes. Automatic air conditioning, head-up display, modern information and connectivity systems, navigation system, matrix light, 16-inch aluminum or heating for the front seats and steering wheel are available via four comfort lines and various packages. It is not surprising that the basic model is rather poorly equipped. With a little need for comfort, around 19,000 euros should be on the bill for many buyers, then many of the assistants offered such as fatigue detection, 360-degree camera or a city emergency braking system with pedestrian detection on board and a chic metallic paint color are applied to the body.
Speaking of chic: Even if the Mazda 2 is no longer the youngest in the small car segment, it doesn't look old = . The refreshed versions come with a new radiator handle and modified lights, taking on the design elements of the bigger brother Mazda 3. With its beautiful shapes, it is a little easier for the Mazda 2 to position itself in the large small car segment. (SP-X)
