The Ford S-Max has been on the market since 2006. During this time, the family van has dispelled many prejudices against this vehicle category.

With the first Ford S-Max (2006 to 2014), Ford has added a more dynamically designed sister model to its classic, box-shaped, large-capacity van Galaxy. Five centimeters less in length and seven centimeters less in height make the S-Max visibly smaller, but hardly less spacious than its big brother.

The shrinkage is most noticeable in the reduced headroom in the optional third row of seats. With a volume of up to two cubic meters, the luggage compartment is extremely generous, thanks to the variable seating - the seats can be individually moved and can also be lowered flush with the vehicle floor - a good compromise between passenger needs and storage space requirements can always be achieved. The permitted payload is also exceptionally large at up to 762 kilograms, and the trailer load of up to 1800 kilograms is quite decent.

Diesel with 130 and 163 hp recommended

In the used car market, gasoline and diesel are roughly in balance. Long-distance drivers choose the 2.0-liter diesel with 130 hp to 163 hp, which combines powerful pulling power with acceptable consumption. Overall, the range of performance for diesels up to 200 hp from 2.2 liters of displacement is enough, but this is paid for with significantly higher consumption.

Those who do not drive too far or are concerned about diesel driving bans are best off with the turbo gasoline engines introduced in 2010, which Ford calls "Ecoboost" engines. They are available with 1.6 and 2.0 liters displacement and 160 HP to 240 HP power, but each require significantly more fuel than the standard value for the heavy S-Max. This applies even more to the naturally aspirated engines offered before 2010.

Those who care less about fuel costs and CO2 emissions are better off using the powerful and robust-sounding 2.5-liter turbo five-cylinder from Volvo, which Ford also uses in the compact sports car Focus ST. For power transmission, Ford offered the classic automatic torque converter in addition to the manual transmission until the lifting, after which it was replaced by a dual clutch transmission ("Power Shift") on most models.

Basic version Trend already well equipped

Even in the basic "Trend" version, the S-Max has the most important things on board, but the van only becomes really chic and comfortable with extensive extras from the option list. A lot was available in packages, some of which were unusual, such as the “Power” package, which includes xenon light as well as a panoramic glass roof. Basically, the big Ford can be equipped with a lot of comfort and safety technology, which is also due to its descent from the brand flagship Mondeo.

The new car included partial leather seats, up to 18-inch rims, level control, DVD player for the rear and an adaptive chassis. Safety is ensured by seven airbags and the anti-skid ESP as standard, with assistants for high beam, lane keeping and lane changing as an option.

Weight of 1.8 tons

The diesel version of the S-Max weighs around 1.8 tonnes - a weight that is on the joints. Typically for large vans (and not entirely untypical for Ford in general), the family mobile suffers from problems with the axle suspension. The steering system is also criticized much more often by the TÜV than the average. Overall, the chassis is the biggest weak point of the Ford, and the lights are regularly reprimanded during the main inspection. Defects can be remedied there relatively cheaply.

The S-Max combines a generous amount of space with agile behavior on the road and a comparatively quick design. This makes it almost unrivaled among heads of family with a sense of driving fun. You have to accept that he has the typical van problems with the chassis. To compensate for this, early models are available from 4500 euros. (SP-X)
