The visual changes to the Mercedes C-Class, which will be available from July, are only visible to the trained eye. On the other hand, the innovations in terms of comfort, infotainment and safety technology are more extensive.

This results in higher prices. For the rear-wheel drive C 200, Mercedes is now asking 40,000 euros for the sedan and 42,000 euros for the T-model. With all-wheel drive, 2,000 euros more are due each time. The C 220d starts at 42,000 and 44,000 euros respectively. The old model was available in the C-200 engine from around 37,000 euros.

In the interior, Mercedes offers new open-pored wood decors, a new multicontour seat with massage function and modified controls. A keyless go system will be standard for all C-Classes in future, in which the signal transmitter can remain in the pocket and the engine is started at the push of a button. The most important innovation, however, is the digital instrument cluster. The standard versions remain with classic analog displays, but in future the customer can optionally have the 12.3-inch screen familiar from the S-Class, which, among other things, can handle different display styles.

Mercedes C-Class adds to assistants

Mercedes has also upgraded the assistance systems. Thanks to improved camera and radar sensors, the repertoire of automated driving skills has been expanded. In addition, the collision avoidance reacts better to pedestrians and cyclists. There is also an emergency assistant on board, which brings the vehicle to a standstill independently if the driver fails. Finally, the cruise control can now adapt the vehicle speed to the traffic routing based on the navigation data.

The optical measures are limited to a redesigned front apron and modified lights at the front and rear. For the first time, the headlights can be ordered in the multibeam LED version in combination with ultra-range high beam. The high-tech lights with 84 individually controllable LEDs can dynamically adapt their light to the traffic situation, which among other things allows driving with permanent high beam, which incidentally extends up to 650 meters.

New four-cylinder engines

A new generation of four-cylinder petrol engines (M 264) provides the drive. At the market launch, Mercedes is offering the 135 kW / 184 hp 1.5-liter petrol in the C 200 with rear-wheel and all-wheel drive. A 2.0-liter variant will follow later. The 48-volt system with belt-driven starter-generator is also new in the C 200.

The standard electrification creates the conditions for fuel-saving additional functions such as sailing with the engine switched off or recuperation options. In addition, the generator called EQ Boost can support the combustion engine when accelerating with an additional 10 kW / 14 PS and thus bridge the turbo lag. Mercedes specifies fuel consumption at 6.1 to 6.8 liters. In addition, a new diesel engine (OM 654) with a displacement of two liters and 143 kW / 194 hp is available in the 220 d, 18 kW / 25 hp more than the previous unit had. (SP-X)
