The Renegade is the smallest SUV in the German Jeep portfolio. However, the basic variant does not meet the actual values of the robust brand.

The Americans only refreshed the look of the 4.26 meter long Renegade, which has been available since 2014, last spring. In autumn it received a technical update, including new gasoline engines. A 1.0-liter three-cylinder with 88 kW / 120 PS now acts as the entry-level unit. This is only available with front-wheel drive and costs from 20,700 euros.

Our test vehicle with the small Otto engine drove up in the Limited version and costs at least 25,200 euros. With this highest level of comfort for the front-wheel drive variants, the standard features include two-zone automatic air conditioning, various assistants, 17-inchers, keyless entry, infotainment system and a folding rear seat back.

Jeep Renegade optically typical of the brand

Die-hard fans may turn up their noses, but many Renegade customers appreciate the typical Jeep design, but do not need all-wheel drive or off-road mobility; they consciously forego values for which the traditional company has been synonymous for decades.

When it comes to looks, the little one doesn't have to hide behind his bigger brothers. The beefy front with the seven brand-typical slits in the radiator grille, the large aluminum and the angular shape make a difference and underline its claim not to be a small SUV. At least you don't see that the Renegade shares technology and assembly lines with the Fiat 500X.

Upgraded interior

The interior benefited from the renovation measures last spring. Less hard plastic, more shelves, a modified center console and a modern infotainment system have found their way into the car. The latter had no problems with either Apple or Android smartphones, and integrated them quickly and reliably. Whether you need the surcharge navigation system (1090 euros) with an 8.4-inch display in view of Google Maps and Co., remains a matter of opinion.

The seats should be a matter of opinion or back. Where the driver and companion cannot relax on the seats for too long, long-legged occupants will quickly feel the not-too-generous seat covers. At least points can be achieved with seat heating as standard. And the steering wheel heater even warms your hands. As is typical of an SUV, you can enjoy the slightly higher seating position not only when driving, but also when getting in and out.

Knowing how to read is an advantage

Several assistance systems are new on board. The high beam and lane departure warning system as well as the blind spot warning system are convincing, even though the warning of possible dangers from blind spots is in an extremely shrill tone. You should always pay attention to the traffic signs and not rely on the corresponding sign. In our vehicle, he only recognized signs that were on motorways or federal highways. On other streets, it alternately showed signs of 30 or 70 in the display - regardless of where you were driving in or out of town. Maybe you forgot to save traffic signs for country roads and towns in the system?

Fortunately, we can still read ourselves, so that the exits with the vehicle were compliant with traffic law. Especially since the three-cylinder turbo does not suffer from a lack of temper, at least as long as you keep it happy. Thanks to the smooth manual six-speed gearshift, that wasn't a problem. If you move with at least 1750 revolutions - here the maximum torque of 190 Nm is available - the small turbo is very agile.

However, wannabe cowboys and girls shouldn't overdo it on their rides over the asphalt, because the engine quickly gets thirsty. The standard value of 6.1 liters was not achievable even with a very cautious driving style, with a gentle foot on the accelerator we achieved an average consumption of 8.1 liters. This is certainly also noticeable that a Renegade was not necessarily developed according to aerodynamic specifications.

By the way: Of course, in keeping with the company's tradition, this jeep is also available with all-wheel drive. The two 2.0-liter diesels with 103 kW / 140 PS and 125 kW / 170 PS are delivered exclusively with 4 × 4 technology. Those who prefer a gasoline engine with all-wheel drive have to wait a little longer. A 180 hp engine is in the starting blocks and will probably expand the range of engines for the small jeep in the summer. (SP-X)
