The Porsche 911 is the heart of the brand and has just come onto the market. Little by little, a large number of derivatives will come - but a pure E version will be a long time coming.

The sports car, known internally by Porsche as 992, has again been refined evolutionary and is better than ever in terms of driving dynamics. The fan community only rubs against one detail: the retractable door handles. Few understand this style break, especially since functionality also suffers. “We wanted to keep the flank smooth and slim,” says chief designer Michael Mauer, defending his work. This flaw will not affect sales of the 992. The Carrera is doing brilliantly, especially in America, the world's strongest market for the iconic sports car.

Porsche started sales with the S and S convertible versions. Those in the know know that the marketing machine is now getting up to speed in Zuffenhausen. In the next few years, the sales department will again provide far more than a dozen derivatives, with different services, drives, bodies and equipment. They listen to names like 4S, GTS, GT3, GT2, Targa, Turbo and the like and are mixed so skilfully that each customer feels addressed individually.

Several special editions for fans of the brand

There are also various special editions, always in high demand and usually sold out in no time. Even if the products are from the previous series, such as the GT3 RS or the Speedster anniversary model, which is now being delivered. The same applies to the 935/2018 in the special Martini racing paintwork. The 77 copies, unit price at least over 700,000 euros, were sold immediately.

The models mentioned belong to the “Emotions” category at Porsche, as does the naturally aspirated high-speed concept of the four-liter boxer, which the next GT3 (2020) and GT3 RS (2021) will also be equipped with. Together, these vehicles form one of the company's three pillars of strategy and revenue. The salespeople see an unbroken high demand here. Likewise with special editions. Whether limited or not, they just have to "come across as credible", says the marketing department.

Turbo S comes at the end of the year

At the end of this year, Porsche is likely to present its top model, the Turbo, and send it to dealers in early 2020, followed by the Turbo S, which will move towards 600 hp. The basic version of the Carrera is also planned for this time. It does without the S in the name and with a few less horsepower. The 992 Targa is of course set again. It is considered the "designer piece" within the series. GT2 and GT2 RS are on the agenda for around 2021. The latter remains at around 700 hp, more power would no longer justify the effort in terms of stability, according to the engineers.

Despite all of Porsche's serious electric strategy and the rollout of plug-in hybrids, two model series are still behind in terms of electrification: Boxster / Cayman and 911. It will probably stay that way. If it was initially said that the 911 would get a hybrid drive for the first facelift (2021/22), the lights are now red. A number of plug-in prototypes were already on the way, but only brought disillusionment.

Disparity in benefit and effort

There is a blatant disproportion between benefits and expenses, the additional weight of almost 200 kilograms drives an unwanted spiral upwards, which not only entails additional weight (different tires and chassis parts, larger brakes), but also around 204 hp more power to compensate. In addition, all crash scenarios must be met for all variants, including the already heavy derivatives Cabrio and Targa.

Therefore, it could very well be possible that Porsche will get straight to the point and make the same decision on the next 911 as it did with the Macan. The next generation of the SUV will roll off the assembly line as a purely electric model from 2022, although the old petrol engine version will still be built for some countries. (SP-X)
