Opel has further reduced the drag coefficient of the new Astra. The eleventh generation of the compact class from the Rüsselsheim-based company has decreased particularly in terms of height and width.
Opel celebrates its premiere at the IAA in September with the most aerodynamic Astra the Rüsselsheim-based company has ever built. “We have designed the new Astra to be more aerodynamic than ever before, so that we can achieve aerodynamic drag values which in their range all exceed the best values of the previous model. We were able to gain important findings from the tests in the ultra-modern wind tunnel at the University of Stuttgart, with which we have been working for many years,”says Reiner Weidemann, head of the aerodynamics department at Opel.
More compact dimensions for the Opel Astra
The main reason for the drag coefficient of over 0.285 is the more compact dimensions that the eleventh generation of the compact class received. The new Astra is 2.5 centimeters lower and has lost half a centimeter in width.
A roof that swings out gently towards the rear and the rear spoiler acting as a spoiler lip also contributed to the positive development in terms of aerodynamics. At the C-pillar, the airflow is also divided more efficiently thanks to better set edges.
Thanks to the closed underbody paneling, the airflow can pass better below the passenger cell. The new rear axle was set higher and now does not present an additional obstacle for the air flowing through under the vehicle, as the manufacturer said. (AG)
