Daimler and Bosch are launching an automated shuttle service in the USA. The pilot project is scheduled to start in the second half of 2019.
With this, both companies want to tackle the next hurdle in their research on driverless driving. The test is intended to show how an entire fleet of autonomous vehicles can be integrated into a city's transport network.

The test area is to be a metropolis in Silicon Valley in the US state of California - exactly which one has not yet been determined. There are already a large number of tests for this.
Shuttle service from taxi and car sharing
Rather, it's about setting up a shuttle service as a mixture of taxi and car sharing on selected routes in the city - but without a driver. Passengers order the vehicle, which then comes to them alone and takes them to their destination fully automatically. “It is crucial to introduce a safe, reliable and series-ready system,” emphasized Michael Hafner, who heads the Automated Driving division at Daimler.
The two groups launched the cooperation last year. Bosch develops components such as sensors and control units, Daimler makes the cars available and houses the technology in them. Engineers from both companies are developing the driving system together.
The provider is Daimler's mobility division
The platform on which the algorithms run and the data in the car is to be processed at lightning speed comes from the US technology company Nvidia. The shuttle service is to be operated by Daimler's mobility service division, which includes offers such as Car2Go, My Taxi and Moovel.
“The development of automated driving that is ready for series production is like a decathlon,” said Bosch product division manager Stephan Hönle. Bringing automated driving safely onto the street and into the city will only succeed if you master all disciplines and not just one or two. (dpa)
