In Stuttgart, for the first time, cars are allowed to park fully automatically and without a security driver in the parking garage of the Mercedes-Benz Museum. The authorities have given the project partners Daimler and Bosch approval for this.

Both companies described this as a milestone on the way to automated driving. Anyone driving in the parking garage of the Mercedes Museum can order the automated parking and parking service via app. The car is then parked or pulled up without a security driver. It is the first level 4 parking function worldwide to be approved by the authorities.

“The decision by the authorities shows that innovations such as automated valet parking are first possible in Germany,” said Bosch managing director Markus Heyn. The manager described driverless driving and parking as an important component of future mobility. “The automated parking system makes it clear how far we have come on this development path,” Heyn continues.

Daimler speaks of a role model

For the car manufacturer Daimler, the approval granted by the authorities for Baden-Württemberg is "a role model for allowing parking service in multi-storey car parks around the world", said Michael Hafner, who is responsible for driving technologies and automated driving at the car manufacturer. "As a pioneer in automated driving, we are paving the way with this project to bring automated valet parking into series production in the future," added Heyn.

The project initiated by Daimler and Bosch was accompanied by the authorities and TÜV Rheinland from the start in order to be able to evaluate the safe operation of the vehicle and parking garage technology. The result is a security concept with corresponding test and approval criteria. This includes, for example, the detection of pedestrians and other vehicles entering the route.

Parking garage technology from Bosch

While Bosch provided the parking garage technology, the vehicle technology came from Daimler. The parking garage, the driving corridor and the surroundings are monitored by Bosch sensors and passed on to the vehicle so that the commands received can be converted into driving maneuvers. This also makes it possible to drive to parking spaces on different floors.

The project started in 2015, the pilot solution has been running since 2017. Since 2018 it has been possible for visitors to experience valet parking in the presence of security staff. The system will go into real operation shortly.
