Electric car drivers can fill up with electricity free of charge for 80 weeks in Wolfsburg. For this purpose, VW has set up flexible fast charging stations across the entire city.
As Volkswagen announced on Friday, nine of the total of twelve fast charging stations are permanently connected to the power grid in the first phase of this pilot project. In addition, three further stations would be used flexibly at major events. The twelve flexible fast charging stations are part of a gift from the car manufacturer to Wolfsburg as part of the city's birthday to set up an urban fast charging infrastructure.

The use of the new charging stations is not only possible for drivers of an electrified model from the VW Group, but they can also be used by drivers of electric or hybrid models from other manufacturers. Not only normal charging (AC), but also fast charging (DC) with an output of up to 100 kW is possible at the charging stations.
Re-use of used batteries
"A comprehensive charging infrastructure in urban areas is one of the essential steps in an e-mobile future," says Thomas Schmall, CEO of the Volkswagen Group Components. As the manager added, the flexible charging station developed by VW Components is an “important component for a functioning network of charging points. It can be set up wherever there is a need - permanently connected, but also independent of the power grid."
As Schmall added, the batteries already used in electric cars in the mobile charging stations can be given a second life cycle. We are thus assuming end-to-end responsibility for the battery from the cell to recycling,”says Schmall.
Relief of the power grid
The mobile charging stations can be set up wherever there is a need, but no charging infrastructure has yet been available. Another advantage of this flexible charging station from VW Components is that it can be connected to the low-voltage network. This reduces the installation effort compared to other fast charging stations. In addition, the flexible charging station can help relieve the load on the power grid, as the built-in battery pack enables “grid decoupling by buffering the energy.
VW Components is currently working on a variety of innovative charging solutions. It was only recently announced that they were working on mobile charging robots. They bring electricity to the electric car autonomously. The entire charging process takes place without human intervention. The Wolfsburg-based company is convinced that the mobile charging robot can trigger a revolution in charging, for example in multi-storey car parks or underground garages.
