BMW installed an emergency lane app in the navigation systems installed from 2015. This is activated after a software update.

BMW cars now ask their drivers to form an emergency lane if necessary. The new function of the navigation system (from model year 2015) is now automatically on board in around 100,000 cars after a software update, further models are to follow, including the brand's motorcycles.

The emergency lane app uses data from the police traffic reporting points and warns in real time via the vehicle screen. In this way, the drivers should be able to start forming the lane early so as not to obstruct the emergency vehicles. In addition to the appropriate navigation system, a subscription to the paid BMW online service "Connected Drive" is required for use.

New rating system for car insurance

It is unclear whether the new system will be incorporated into the rating system developed by the Munich-based company and reinsurer Swiss Re for the amount of car insurance. Drivers who have many assistance systems on board should pay less for car insurance.

The core of the new evaluation scheme is an algorithm that calculates the effect of driver assistance systems that are available in individual cases on the safety of cars. This value can then be used by insurance companies to calculate the premium amount of their customers. Currently, the age and model of a car, among other things, are included, but not data on individual safety equipment. It is not yet known when the new rating system will be available and who will use it. (SP-X)
