Sports studies are a tradition at the GTI meeting at Wörthersee. But the sporty version of the VW Up will even roll off the production line in the coming year.

In 1976 VW brought a real sports car horror onto the market with the first Golf GTI. The Golf, which weighs just 810 kilos and has 110 hp, could now find a successor worthy of it. The Up should be available as a GTI in 2018. At the annual tuning and Golf GTI meeting on Lake Wörthersee, the Wolfsburg-based company is now showing a “study” that will probably go into production next year without any major changes.

Under the hood is a three-cylinder turbo with 1.0 liter displacement and 85 kW / 115 PS. The torque is 200 Newton meters. The 997 kilo heavy Up runs to 100 km / h in 8.8 seconds and ends at 197 km / h. The components that are important in terms of driving dynamics also include a larger brake from the brand's brother Polo, 17-inch alloy wheels and a sports suspension with a depth of 1.5 centimeters.

Check pattern is a must

Visually, VW trims the Up with black double side stripes, a red trim in the radiator grille, a matt black diffuser and small spoilers on the front and rear of the GTI. In the interior there is the traditional check pattern on the seats as well as GTI inlays on the gear knob, steering wheel and door sills.

There are still no prices for the two- and four-door mini sports car. The basic model should cost around 18,000 euros and be a bit more expensive than the Renault Twingo GT with 80 kW / 110 PS and an empty weight of 1001 kilograms for 15,590 euros. (SP-X)
