The car manufacturer BMW has extensively restored the study of the 2800 GTS Frua. The result is a beautiful coupé.

Some of the studies by the Turin bodybuilder Frua are among the special Italian moments in BMW history. After BMW took over the manufacturer Glas at the end of the 1960s, Frua wanted to win over the BMW superiors to continue his cooperation with Glas.

Some breathtaking studies, such as the 2800 GTS Frua, should do some convincing. The advertising attempt was unsuccessful, but the Munich-based carmaker has now completely restored one of the virtually lost concept cars.

Caused a stir at trade fairs

In 1969 and 1970 the elegant, slim 2 + 2-seater coupé caused a sensation at trade fairs in Frankfurt, Paris, Geneva and Barcelona. From the last exhibition station, the GTS passed into the private ownership of a Spaniard in 1971, was resold, shut down and resold. In the 80s, it was repainted in wine red and a new engine and a folding sunroof were installed.

In 2000, a Dutchman bought the 2800 GTS and brought it from Valencia to his homeland to offer it for sale there. At that time, the classic department of BMW struck, which put the worn-out one-off item into a deep slumber for a long time.

Restoration from 2017 to 2019

In the years 2017 to 2019, a complete restoration was carried out with the participation of various specialists based in Bavaria. In order to restore the vehicle to its original condition, it was sometimes necessary to have a top detective feeling, because the original paint, a bright metallic green, could no longer be seen under the more modern layers. The original color was only found under the hinge of the tank lid.

As with the previous study, the interior was again lined with light brown leather. The subsequently inserted folding roof was replaced by a solid metal roof. The engine was also replaced. Now under the long hood of the GTS, as once again, there is an in-line six-cylinder taken from the 2800 CS.

Its wild past, its odyssey and the various conversions can no longer be seen on this special one-off. From the point of view of some patina fans, this may be a sacrilege, but in return the former 2800 GTS shines again just as Pietro Frua once created it as an automotive work of art. (SP-X)
