The explosion of a natural gas-powered VW Touran can be traced back to a rusty gas tank. According to an expert report, the tank did not withstand the pressure when refueling.

The cause of the explosion of a natural gas-powered VW Touran while refueling in Duderstadt in southern Lower Saxony in mid-September has been clarified. The reason was rust on the gas tank, said a spokesman for the Göttingen public prosecutor's office on Tuesday.

A report showed that the rusted container could not withstand the pressure during refueling. The "Eichsfelder Tageblatt" reported that this caused natural gas to leak and deflate. The driver was seriously injured by debris flying around. In response to the incident, several petrol station companies recommended their stations and tenants to temporarily stop selling natural gas.

Investigations are ongoing

The ten-year-old VW Touran was one of the cars that VW recalled because of possible damage to the gas tanks. According to the prosecutor, the car has not been repaired. "We are now checking whether there are possibly responsible persons at VW who should have made sure that the vehicle is shut down," said Attorney General Andreas Buick. A possible liability of the vehicle owner is also being examined.

A good 35,000 vehicles of the Caddy, Passat and Touran models from 2006 to 2010 were affected by the VW recall campaign for the precautionary exchange of gas bottles. The reason was possible corrosion of the gas containers. (dpa)
