Like the hydrogen infrastructure, the production of fuel cells is still in its infancy. Car manufacturers and suppliers now want to drive the industrialization of fuel forward.

So far, there have only been announcements from the German manufacturers. While Hyundai and Toyota have already had serial production of hydrogen vehicles for years, Daimler seems to follow suit at the turn of the year. But the technology is still in its infancy in both series production and infrastructure, although this type of electromobility is much more effective than battery-electric mobility.

"The emission-free fuel cell drives are ideal for touring limousines, delivery vehicles and city buses," says Werner Tillmetz, board member and head of the Electrochemical Energy Technologies division at the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW) of the technology at an early stage. With the 'Autostack Industry' project, the basis for achieving cost and quality targets is to be created by building up a powerful national supplier industry."

Four automakers support the project

With the project Autostack Industry, the establishment of important elements of the industrialization of fuel cells for automobiles is to be promoted jointly by the automobile manufacturers and suppliers, announced ZSW. In addition to increasing the output, the project is intended to help increase the service life and reliability of the fuel cell and to reduce costs for the technology, which is still very expensive.

Embedded in the National Innovation Program for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NIP) by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, which is funding the project with 21.3 million euros, the National Organization for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NOW) coordinates the procedure. The automakers Daimler, BMW, and Ford are joining themand Volkswagen as well as DANA, Freudenberg Performance Materials, Greenerity, NuCellSys, Powercell Germany, Umicore and the ZSW. (AG / TF)
