Hyundai has presented a new fuel cell vehicle. At the same time, the manufacturer announced a basic architecture for electric cars, the first product to be launched in 2018.

As early as 2013, Hyundai offered a hydrogen-powered vehicle, the ix35 FCEV, for sale. In 2018 a new, significantly improved generation will come onto the market, which has now been presented in Seoul. Hyundai is the first manufacturer to mass-produce a fuel cell vehicle.

As with the well-known ix35 FCEV, the future FCEV model is an SUV that, apart from a few slightly futuristic details such as the headlights, comes across as quite conventional. The new vehicle is based on the FE Concept study presented at the Geneva Motor Show.

Improved drive technology

The improved drive technology is more decisive. According to Hyundai, the new generation of fuel cells should be significantly more efficient and, thanks to improved tank technology, can travel up to 800 kilometers with one charge of hydrogen. That is over 200 kilometers more than before. In addition, the electric drive with 120 kW / 163 PS offers 20 percent more power than the ix35 FCEV. The cold start behavior has also been optimized. In future, the vehicle should also be ready to drive at minus 30 degrees.

The drive is already the fourth generation of fuel cells from Hyundai. For the first time in 1998, the Koreans had a fuel cell vehicle based on the Santa Fepresented. In the fourth edition, three instead of the previous two hydrogen tanks are being used, which due to the higher material thickness offer even more safety and optimized storage of the hydrogen.

New basic architecture for electric cars

Hyundai calls the new fuel cell vehicle the spearhead of the line of low-emission vehicles. By 2020, Hyundai wants to bring at least 31 environmentally friendly models to the market together with Kia. The first fuel cell vehicle from Kia should not come until 2020.

In addition to the fuel cell vehicle, Hyundai is building a new basic architecture for electric vehicles on which several models with a long range are produced. The first electric car is announced for the first half of 2018 and is the Kona Elektro with a range of up to 390 kilometers. (AG / SP-X)
