Hyundai has given a name to its new hydrogen vehicle. The Nexo is even becoming a smart car for the whole household.

Hyundai has christened its new fuel cell vehicle at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The second production car with hydrogen after the ix35 Fuel Cell is called Nexo.

“Hydrogen is the key to a more sustainable society. Hyundai has already taken a leading position in hydrogen technology with the introduction of the fuel cell in the ix35 Fuel Cell,”said Woong-chul Yang, Vice Chairman of Hyundai Motor. "The Nexo is further proof that we are consistently using our cutting-edge technologies to reduce global warming."

18 environmentally friendly models by 2025

The Nexo is the door opener for 18 other environmentally friendly models that are to follow by 2025. The Koreans are currently the only manufacturer that covers all important alternative drive types in series with hybrid, plug-in hybrid, electric and fuel cell technology.

Compared to its predecessor ix35 Fuel Cell - the first hydrogen vehicle in series - Hyundai has redesigned the fuel cell system. Less installation space with an improved output of 27 hp ensure that the Nexo sprints three seconds better. The new one uses 120 kW / 163PS and a torque of 395 Newton meters. The refueling process only takes five minutes.

Hyundai specifies the range with over 800 kilometers, around 30 percent more than its predecessor. This is the result of the consistent lightweight construction and the optimization of the aerodynamics of the fuel cell vehicle on its own platform.

At the same time as the new vehicle, new assistance systems also flowed into the Nexo. The Nexo does not have a blind spot warner, but a blind spot view monitor. The vehicle's surroundings are shown on the driver's display using a wide-angle camera.

Available in Germany from summer

Lane Following Assist (LFA) keeps the car in the middle of the lane up to a speed of 145 kilometers per hour. In conjunction with the Highway Driving Assistant (HDA), semi-autonomous driving is then possible. The Nexo also handles parking in and out independently. By pressing the key, the vehicle crawls into even the smallest parking spaces. The driver himself does not have to be in the vehicle.

The cockpit also delivers something extraordinary. A display unit is installed that extends from the driver's door via the center console to the front passenger area. This can be operated via the steering wheel or by voice control. In addition, Hyundai will be demonstrating at CES that the Hyundai Nexo can also supply households with electricity and water.

The new series vehicle will be on the market in Germany from summer and will be offered to commercial and private customers alike. Hyundai has not yet announced prices.
