In the centrally located city of Chungju, the company held a ceremony to mark the start of construction on its second factory for fuel cells, which generate electricity from hydrogen.

Currently capacity of 3000 units

The capacity of the existing fuel cell factory is 3000 units, with which the Nexo SUV powered by a fuel cell and an electric motor is also equipped.

The group includes the South Korean industry leader Hyundai Motor and its smaller sister company Kia Motors. Together they are number five among the largest automakers. Kia is also planning to offer a fuel cell vehicle in addition to its hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric models.

Delivery to other manufacturers too

500,000 of the fuel cells are to be used for the company's own production of cars and commercial vehicles. The plans also envisage that 200,000 units will be delivered to other car manufacturers as well as manufacturers of drones, ships, rail vehicles and forklifts.

Hyundai wants to expand its role "beyond the auto transport sector and play an important role in the transition of the global society to clean energy," the group vice chairman Chung Eui Sun was quoted as saying. An economically viable energy source should be made from hydrogen. Besides Hyundai, only Toyota with the Mirai and Mercedes with the GLC F-Cell are currently offering fuel cell vehicles on the German market. (AG / dpa)
