The fuel cell is considered a future technology. Accordingly, Mercedes wants to offer its Citaro with this technology.

Until the time comes, however. it will take some time. It is expected to be 2022 before this technology is used in the eCitaro. At the moment, the fuel cell only ekes out a shadowy existence: With the exception of the Toyota Mirai and the Hyundai Nexo, the technology is only used in the Mercedes GLC F-Cell. The Swabians do not sell the vehicle for free, it only goes to selected customers.

But more and more manufacturers have announced that they will be paying more attention to the technology. This also includes the fuel cell pioneer Mercedes, which is why the eCitaro public transport bus is now also being equipped with it from 2022. The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure is contributing 3.3 million euros to the development as part of the National Innovation Program for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NOW) Euro.

Technical details not known

However, technical details are not yet mentioned. In the case of the eCitaro, the fuel cell is to be installed in addition to the large traction battery in order to increase the range potential. So far, an eCitaro with a 292 kWh battery can travel between 170 and 280 kilometers on one charge.

With a fuel cell as a range extender, the eCitaro should be suitable for every application scenario, according to Mercedes. Renault is pursuing a similar concept with its small van models Kangoo ZE and Master ZE, which will be available in just a few months. In the case of the Master ZE Hydrogen, a fuel cell increases the range from 120 to 350 kilometers.

Part of a decarbonization campaign

The eCitaro with fuel cell is part of a large-scale decarbonization strategy of Daimler's commercial vehicle division. At the German Logistics Congress in Berlin at the end of October, Daimler's board member Martin Daum announced that he would only offer locally emission-free trucks and buses in Europe, North America and Japan by 2039.

The fuel cell will also play an important role in achieving this goal. As a new harbinger of this hydrogen-powered commercial vehicle future, the group subsidiary Fuso recently presented the 7.5-ton "Vision F-Cell" at the Tokyo Motor Show. Like the eCitaro, this should offer a range of 300 kilometers thanks to a combination of battery and fuel cell. (AG / SP-X)
