Harley-Davidson had not yet offered a travel enduro. But that is changing. The Americans bring the Pan America onto the market.

The manufacturer BMW, who has been successful with travel enduros for decades, ventured into the cruiser segment around the turn of the millennium with the R 1200 C. Actually a Harley-Davidson domain. Now comes the late return coach, because with the Pan America presented at the EICMA motorcycle fair in Milan, the V2 forge from Milwaukee is launching its first big Enduro, which will, however, drag on until the end of 2020.

The drive for the massive and robust looking Hochbeiner is a water-cooled V2 60-degree machine with a displacement of 1,250 cubic centimeters. The V2 comes from a new family of American engines called Revolution Max.

No performance values yet

Final performance and driving values are not yet available for the new Harley-Davidson Pan America, but over 145 hp and 122 Newton meters were named as the development goal for the larger of two displacement versions. In the case of the Pan America, they are linked to the rear wheel by a chain. In contrast to the performance, the V2 should clearly hold back against vibrations thanks to the balancer shaft, which should benefit the driving comfort accordingly.

Otherwise, the Pan America is characterized by classic enduro ingredients such as long suspension travel and studded tires. There is also an underride guard, generously dimensioned Brembo brakes, hand protectors and a rear frame construction that is suitable for attaching large suitcases. A large windscreen and cruise control should provide some comfort on long journeys. If you go up mountain passes, there is also a heated grip.

For the cockpit, Harley-Davidson relies on a modern display that will presumably show more than just driving-related values. In any case, the control pad on the left handlebar grip suggests that the driver can shimmy through menus that conceal functions for navigation, communication and setting options for vehicle control systems. So they are all features that you would expect from a travel enduro. (SP-X)
