The Korean car maker Hyundai has significantly increased the range of its Kona electric car. The city SUV with the 64 kWh battery can now cover a distance of 484 kilometers on one charge.

The range increase of up to eight percent was achieved through the use of new low-friction tires and modifications to the chassis. As a result, energy consumption was reduced from 15.4 kWh per 100 kilometers to 14.7 kWh and the range increased by 35 kilometers, as the car manufacturer announced on Wednesday at the German headquarters in Offenbach.

Hyundai officially started mass production of the Hyundai Kona Elektro in its European plant in Nosovice, Czech Republic, only last week. Around 35,000 Kona Elektro with the 64 kWh battery are expected to roll off the assembly line there in the first year. The electric city SUV is also still being manufactured at the plant in Usan, South Korea. The variant with a small battery is also manufactured there. With the start of European production, delivery times are to be reduced to three to four months. The plant in Nosovice will now stop production for two weeks from next Monday due to the corona crisis. However, vehicles were already produced for the German market in advance.

Keller: Go on a big tour with peace of mind

Hyundai is one of the providers that can offer its customers the full range of alternative drives. In the previous year alone, Hyundai was able to sell 10,000 emission-free vehicles on the German market, including more than 5000 pure electric cars. Hyundai plans to launch a total of 80,000 zero-emission vehicles in Europe this year.

“Our goal is to make the decision for an electric vehicle as easy as possible for customers. The Kona Elektro had a convincing range so far. With this increase by eight percent to over 480 kilometers, the driver of the Kona Elektro can go on a long tour with a lot of peace of mind, because even longer distances can now be covered in an environmentally conscious way with a single charge,”said Hyundai Germany boss Jürgen Keller.

For a few weeks now, Hyundai has offered customers a purchase premium of 8,000 euros when they buy a Kona Elektro. In addition to the 3,000 euros in government funding, the Koreans have increased the manufacturer's share to 5,000 euros. At the same time, Hyundai has offered the Kona Elektro an eight-year unlimited mileage guarantee and offers customers a wide range of solutions for everything to do with charging infrastructure (installation service, wall boxes, charging cards).
