Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer wants to create more space for cyclists on the road. In addition, more money is made available for infrastructure projects.
This investment is intended to create better bicycle traffic in Germany. "Cyclists are equal road users," said the CSU politician of the news agency dpa. "You therefore not only need more acceptance, but above all more space."

The federal government will for the first time also support infrastructure projects of the federal states and municipalities with an additional 900 million euros - that is what the climate protection program provides. The German Association of Cities called for a "cycle path offensive" from the federal, state and local governments.
ADFC turns 40
On Friday, Scheuer is a guest at a symposium of the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC) in Berlin. The association turns 40 this year. "The aim is a fairer division of the road space and a cycling infrastructure that is as complete and safe as possible," said the minister. “Now we have to work with the federal states and municipalities to ensure that the money arrives as quickly as possible where it is most beneficial. So on site - where people benefit directly and quickly notice improvements."
The managing director of the German Association of Cities, Helmut Dedy, told the dpa that climate-friendly traffic plays a decisive role in cities that are worth living in. “That means that even more people should be mobile by public transport, on foot or by bike.” In many cities, however, the cycle paths were not enough. “That is why we need a cycle path offensive by the federal, state and local governments. A lot has already been done, but there is still a lot to do."
Expansion of cycle superhighways
Cycle superhighways would have to be expanded so that they offer a real alternative to the car and better connect the cities with the surrounding area.
"At train stations and public transport stops, we need bicycle stations that are large enough so that people can transfer easily," said Dedy. “That is why the federal government's funding for cycling should be increased reliably and permanently to over 200 million euros annually. The federal states should promote cycling at least to the same extent through the municipal transport financing. "(Dpa)
