From March 2015, the police in Germany will silently hunt down criminals. VW gave a first look at the Passat with plug-in hybrid drive.
The goal of one million electric vehicles by 2020 is also reflected in the police force. After the Federal Minister of Economics Sigmar Gabriel had underlined the special responsibility of the federal government, states and municipalities with regard to electric mobility at an event at the Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg, the first vehicles of the new Passat GTE are expected to start work in spring, as the manufacturer announced.
VW Passat GTE only needs 1.7 liters
As a GTE, the new Passat is powered by a turbo gasoline direct injection engine (TSI) and an electric motor and thus has a system output of over 160 kW / 218 PS and a top speed of over 220 PS.
The Passat GTE can cover up to 50 kilometers purely electrically in the so-called E-mode and thus silently approach the respective lawbreakers. For the chase, the GTE mode is required, with which the entire performance is called up. Thanks to the combination of electric and combustion engine, the Passat GTE can cover up to 1000 kilometers between two refueling processes. VW specifies consumption as 1.7 liters per 100 kilometers, which corresponds to CO2 emissions of 39 grams per kilometer.
VW Passat Variant is particularly popular with motorway police
In addition to the blue-silver exterior color, the special equipment of the emergency vehicle includes a modern digital radio, a special signal system on the roof and a weapon holder in the passenger door. The station wagon is particularly popular with the motorway police, as the trunk offers enough space for warning lights or traffic cones. (AG)
