German companies are paying increasing attention to CO2 emissions in their company car fleets. While the average value four years ago was 156 grams per kilometer, it currently falls short of the EU limit by just three grams at 133 grams, according to a survey by Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) of 194 large and medium-sized companies. The most climate-friendly company car fleet is maintained by the telecommunications company Freenet, which has an average value of 105 grams. Deutsche Euroshop, an operator of shopping centers, comes in last with 182 grams.
Tchibo boss drives BMW i3
For the first time, the DUH has also created a list of the most climate-friendly company bosses based on their company cars. Tchibo boss Markus Conrad, who officially drives the BMW i3 electric car with a range extender (90 grams of CO2), comes in first. Second place goes to Frost boss Felix Ahlers with the VW Up mini car (98 grams of CO2). This is followed by three managers with a Tesla S electric sedan (103 grams), and the list of top ten vehicles is completed by the Mercedes E-Class Hybrid (116 to 119 grams) and the VW Passat as a Bluemotion fuel economy diesel (119 grams). The classic luxury sedan can no longer be found among the top ten managers. Even if at least plug-in models like the Mercedes S-Class have CO2 emissions well below 100 grams - albeit at steep purchase prices.
The German premium manufacturers are likely to see the move away from the classic executive limousine with a laughing and a crying eye: on the one hand, this makes it easier for them to comply with the EU consumption limits, on the other hand, a profitable business breaks down. In return, the market for the S-Class and its competitors is shifting to the USA and China. (SP-X)
