The VW Up is the ideal car for the city. Anyone who is interested in the small car as a used car does not need to think twice. It causes few problems.

Cheap basic mobility alone is no longer enough, even in the smallest car class. VW has therefore paid attention to a handsome appearance, better technology and proper workmanship with the Up (since 2011). And the long-term quality is also right - even if the level of polo and golf is not reached.

Inner-city dimensions (3.60 meters in length) and a small turning circle are among the most important properties of a city runabout like the VW Up. The Up offers both - but at the expense of the space available. Even in the small car class there are more spacious cars, especially in the rear. This has more of the function of a luggage rack or emergency seats, so you can usually save yourself the expensive five-door and choose the cheaper three-door.

Also available as a cross up

As an additional variant, there is the Cross Up in its own off-road design and with a raised body. The cockpit offers good ergonomics and intuitive usability in all variants, and the numerous shelves are also positive. One exotic feature on the used car market is the Load Up delivery van version, which has a loading area instead of the rear bench.

For a car in its class, the Up offers an unusually extensive drive portfolio. The somewhat sluggish three-cylinder naturally aspirated engines with 1.0 liter displacement and 60 hp or 75 hp are sufficient for city traffic. Anyone who drives across the country should choose the more overtaking-friendly turbo variant with 90 hp. The 115 PS version in the Up GTI offers driving fun.

Natural gas drive recommended

If you want low energy costs and good environmental properties, you should take a look at the 68 hp natural gas drive or the e-model with a lively 82 hp, but only 160 kilometers range. With the exception of the E-model, manual transmissions with five or six gears are used; alternatively, there is a rather inexpensive automated manual transmission for the suction gasoline engine, which makes the three-cylinder even more tired and is considered technically vulnerable.

The basic-up (“take-up”) does not offer much more than three doors, four airbags and a rear seat that can be folded down. With more equipment, the small car quickly becomes significantly more expensive - than new cars, but also as used ones.

A decent level is offered from the "Move Up" level, but air conditioning remains an option there too. The little one is almost completely equipped as a "high up". The list of surcharges is generally quite extensive for a vehicle of this class, offers many technology and design packages as well as interesting individual items such as a sliding glass roof or reversing camera. The security level is decent; In addition to the airbags and ESP, a hill start assist has been standard since 2012, and tire pressure has also been monitored automatically since 2014. In the 2011 Euro NCAP crash test, it was enough for the full five stars.

Occasional exhaust problems

The predecessor Fox was a complete disaster, both technically and in terms of processing. The Up does much better in every respect: axles and steering are unusually durable in the TÜV report, with lighting, brakes and environmental properties it is usually enough for average results. Above all, the exhaust system is often criticized. There are also some minor problems, such as leaking air conditioning, cracking panorama roofs or blocked door locks. Roaring and rattling while driving indicate a basically simple and inexpensive design.

Small cars are developed and built with a red pencil in hand. In return, the VW Up, which is currently traded from around 4000 euros, does quite well. If you value maneuverability and small dimensions, you can definitely grab it - whether with the Up or its structurally identical siblings Seat Mii and Skoda Citigo. In general, however, the following also applies in this used car class: Take a look at the next larger model - in this case the Polo. For not necessarily much more money you can get a lot more car there. (SP-X)
