VW diesel customers can be delighted: Depending on the model and age of their car, they will receive compensation between 1,350 and 6,257 euros.
Volkswagen and the Federal Association of Consumer Organizations (vzbv) agreed on this in their settlement negotiations on the model lawsuit. On average, around 15 percent of the original purchase price should be paid out, the consumer advocates announced on Friday in Berlin.

Around 260,000 victims should receive a corresponding offer. You can then decide for yourself whether to accept this or continue to argue for more money in individual lawsuits.
830 million euros in compensation
Volkswagen is planning an estimated total of 830 million euros for the compensation, the association said. The auto company confirmed this. The amount had already been in the room before, but both sides had surprisingly broken off their out-of-court talks initially. In addition, VW bears the full costs of handling the settlement and legal advisors for the diesel drivers. Independent auditors should randomly check the implementation. An ombudsman should be set up for possible disputes.
VW chief legal advisor Manfred Döss emphasized: "It was important to both sides that an independent control of the implementation and a transparent settlement of the settlement take place." Both are guaranteed. "In addition, if necessary and on request, Volkswagen also provides legal advice."
The consumer advice centers had filed a model declaratory action on behalf of several hundred thousand diesel drivers in order to seek compensation for cars with excessively high emissions. VW and the association recently suspended a first round of settlement negotiations. They then shifted the responsibility to each other for having increased the time pressure through ultimatums - in the end the solution that had actually already been targeted failed.
VW board member Werner: Fair solution
After that, however, they continued talking to an arbitrator. Volkswagen legal board member Hiltrud Werner now spoke of a "fair and practicable settlement solution". The head of the Braunschweig Higher Regional Court (OLG), Wolfgang Scheibel, enabled an agreement to be reached through his “constructive approach”.
The model declaratory action will now be ended, the consumer advocates announced on Friday. “The vzbv fought for more. But in the context of the difficult negotiations, the result is the maximum that can be achieved,”said Klaus Müller, the board member. VW's offer lies within the scope of the amounts of compensation previously obtained in similar proceedings before German courts.
BGH negotiates on May 5th
Diesel owners who bought their car after December 31, 2015 or who were not domiciled in Germany at the time of purchase will not receive a comparison offer. "We think that these people also have demands," said Müller. The basics are so individual that they cannot be clarified in a model lawsuit. The scandal surrounding manipulated exhaust gas values in millions of diesel cars from the VW group worldwide became public at the end of September 2015.
Those affected would have to decide by April 20 whether they wanted to accept VW's settlement offer, according to consumer advocates. Volkswagen insisted on this date because the Federal Court of Justice wants to deal again with the diesel fraud on May 5. Among other things, Karlsruhe will then probably be concerned with whether claims for damages and compensation for use are justified. This means that both VW and the diesel drivers bear a certain risk. "If you want to take less risk, you can accept the comparison," said Müller. (dpa)
