The supply chains no longer work due to the Corona crisis: This is why Volkswagen will temporarily stop car production in Russia from next week.

From next week, production should pause for two weeks, it said on Tuesday from the corporate headquarters in Wolfsburg. For its Kaluga and Nizhny Novgorod plants, VW is also dependent on component supplies from, for example, Western Europe. The supply of dealers and customers is currently ensured, according to the Russian agency Tass.

Most of the vehicles are produced by the world's largest car company in Russia at the Kaluga site, around 190 kilometers southwest of Moscow. Up to 225,000 cars can be completed there per year. Last year the brands of the VW Group delivered a total of 233,600 vehicles in the country, 1.6 percent more than in 2018.

Production in Germany already suspended

Due to interrupted supply chains, the sharp drop in demand for cars and the risk of contagion in the factories, VW had already suspended production in all German and many European plants last week. In Chattanooga (USA) the tapes will be stopped for an initial week. In Argentina and Brazil, work is also no longer carried out at the moment, in Mexico there will be a break from March 30th. Daughters such as Audi, Porsche and Skoda - like other car manufacturers - also put their work on hold.

VW is currently looking into temporarily producing some medical technology parts, for example for ventilators, which are lacking in many clinics. In China there are also plans to buy medical technology and then make it available to the healthcare system.

In the previous week, the car manufacturer had already announced that it would make almost 200,000 respiratory protection masks of the categories FFP-2 and FFP-3 available for public health care. The donation is made in close coordination with Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn. “Public health workers are currently doing outstanding work for society. We are convinced that the protective masks are currently best used by you. The Board of Management agrees: Volkswagen is happy to provide assistance with no red tape,”said Gunnar Kilian, Board Member for Human Resources. (AG / dpa)
