VW has presented the new Caddy. The high roof combination is now also based on the Group's modular transverse construction kit, but an E version is still a long time coming.

According to official Volkswagen counts, the fifth generation of the Caddy is finally up to date. The all-purpose mobile now based on the MBQ is optically further developed - but the revolution has not materialized, at least at the front.

Here the high-roof combination shows the typical face of the family with carefully optically modified headlights - if desired, of course, with LED technology. The rear is more clearly different from the predecessor, and with the now considerably longer vertical taillights it evokes memories of Citroën Berlingo or Mercedes Citan.

Got nine centimeters longer

The standard version of the new Caddy grows by around nine centimeters to 4.50 meters and has a seven centimeter longer wheelbase. In contrast, the Maxi version, which will come onto the market a little later, will be more compact with 4.85 instead of 4.88 meters - and the technicians also shorten these three centimeters for the wheelbase. However, the dimension of the sliding door has increased by 14 to 84 centimeters, which makes it easier to get into the optional seven-seater. Storage volumes of 3300 or 4000 liters are an announcement to the practicality group - also the fact that the Volkswagen newcomer can swallow two Euro pallets across.

The progress is also clear in the interior: the Caddy in 2020 is digital through and through. Analogous to the Golf VIII, all mechanical displays have been replaced by pure screen surfaces. Buttons for tapping, voice control and touchscreen operation are displacing the classic handling, which sometimes involved rotary controls. The Caddy should also listen to "Hey, Volkswagen" and obey acoustic commands accordingly, including climate control.

Entry of the assistance systems

The new modular system also allows a deeper grip in the assistant box - the "Travel Assist" automatically takes over the longitudinal and lateral guidance for some time, which means that the Caddy keeps the speed via cruise control and brakes to a standstill when the Before man does that too. And if the controller is active, the vehicle also steers. Also new on board the Caddy: "Trailer Assist" to simplify maneuvering with a trailer. By the way, the cross-traffic warning system should actually prevent accidents when reversing into flowing traffic. Because it not only beeps, but also locks the car in place if the driver brakes too late or not at all.

Well-known petrol and diesel engines are responsible for driving at the market launch. In addition to the 1.5-liter, 116-hp Otto, three 2.0-liter TDI units with outputs of 75 hp, 102 hp and 122 hp are used. With the help of double Adblue treatment of the exhaust gas, the Lower Saxony should succeed in drastically reducing the NOx pollution in the Caddy in the future. In the following year, a CNG drive and the plug-in hybrid will debut.

Instead of a rigid axle with leaf springs, coil springs are now finding their way into the caddy. The so-called trailing arm guided rigid axle should allow it to roll more smoothly. However, the new Caddy also has to do without an independent rear suspension.

Can also be ordered with a panoramic roof

But many variants make it tasty for a wide range of customers, after all, there will still be the delivery van versions with sheet metal instead of glass windows, as well as the much more stylish passenger car versions, which have a 1.4 square meter panoramic glass roof as an option. All-wheel drive and seven-speed double couplers are available at an additional cost, as has recently also been a keyless locking system plus closing aids for the sliding doors in order to accommodate the convenience demanded by customers.

Fleet operators will enjoy numerous functions from the world of "We Connect", with the help of which they can not only control the locking of the car remotely and call up fuel levels, but also find out when the car leaves a previously defined area. Digital routes and consumption analyzes can also be tracked and carried out.

Those interested in a Caddy will have to do without a fully electric version, which will be delivered from 2022 with a similar model from the ID family. It's a shame, because a pure electric drive makes a lot of sense with such a model. But if you ask for it, you have to ask Abt in the Allgäu. (SP-X)
