Skoda relies on the power of its SUVs. After the Czech car manufacturer already had two off-road vehicles, the Karoq and Kodiaq, the Kamiq is now rolling out to dealers.

It celebrates its market launch from September 21st. For the smallest of the three SUVs, customers then confidently have to pay 17,950 euros. In return, the buyer gets the 1.0 TSI with a 95 hp three-cylinder engine and manual five-speed gearbox

With the Kamiq, the Czechs want to significantly increase their sales on the German market. The Karoq and Kodiaq currently account for around a third of sales, as Germany sales manager Stefan N. Quary says. “That will only increase with the Kamiq. Quary assumes that with the new SUV model, the share of total sales can be "increased by 36 percent".

The chances that this will succeed are good. Because not only the segment of city SUVs is booming, but above all that of city SUVs. In this area, the successful VW subsidiary had so far nothing on offer. But that will change in a month. A very convincing model awaits the customers, as the first test drives in Alsace showed. The Kamiq, which uses the same base as the Scala, initially offers customers a spacious interior.

Thanks to its length of 4.24 meters, the Kamiq is not only quite compact, but with a wheelbase of 2.65 meters (Skoda speaks of a top value in the city SUV segment) and a width of 1.79 meters, it is particularly comfortable for rear passengers Space.

Boot space 400 liters

However, they are not at the expense of the capacity of the trunk, which has a volume of 400 liters. If you move the back seat, 1395 liters of luggage can be stowed away. That should be enough for a small family to take the trip to the weekend vacation. The wide-opening tailgate can optionally also be closed electrically.

The rest of the interior is just as you know it from Skoda: the quality impression leaves nothing to be desired. The materials look and feel valuable. The cockpit of our test car is determined by the 9.2 inch touchscreen (standard is 6.5 inches) in the center console. The screen is not only razor sharp, but can also be easily operated with one finger. This is also possible with the new language assistant Laura. After the command "Okay, Laura" it reacts surprisingly precisely to the voice commands of the user.

Equipped with eSim for the first time

The Skoda Connect system in the Kamiq is also equipped with an e-SIM and thus offers a WLAN hotspot for fellow travelers that is easy to set up. Children in particular should be happy about this when they go on vacation. For charging the cell phone, there is not only an inductive charging cradle under the center console, but also four USB ports with the USB-C standard, as Skoda points out.

Thanks to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the smartphone can also be used as a navigation system. A fully digital display is optionally available for the driver. It can also be used to display the navigation map in the driver's direct field of vision.

More efficient 1.0 TSI with 115 PS

The Kamiq is offered by the Czechs as a 1.0 TSI with 95 and 115 hp and as a 1.5 TSI with 150 hp, but only with front-wheel drive. An all-wheel drive is not provided. With the exception of the basic version, all engines are equipped with a manual six-speed gearbox or optionally with a 7-speed DSG. In the diesel engine, the power spectrum of the 1.6 TDI is 115 hp. At a later date, the Kamiq will also be available with a CNG drive.

We drove the 1.0 TSI with 115 PS (20,950). An engine that is not a paragon of sportiness, but is ultimately sufficient to get from A to B comfortably with the Kamiq. The three-cylinder turbo gasoline engine runs extremely smoothly on low tours. Only when you demand more performance from him does he go about his work quite audibly, but not in a disturbing way. An empty weight of 1.4 tons also needs to be moved.

The maximum torque of our test car is 200 Newton meters, which is available between 2000 and 3500 revolutions per minute. This city SUV sprints from 0 to 100 km / h in 10 seconds and has a top speed of 193 km / h. Consumption is given as 4.9 liters. In the test drives it was 5.7 liters with careful driving style.

Comfortable chassis

With its standard chassis, the Kamiq is extremely comfortable on the road and filters bad road conditions quite confidently. If you like it a bit sportier, no problem either. The city SUV from the Czechs can also be ordered with an optional sports suspension (surcharge € 430).

All in all, the new product in the Skoda portfolio leaves a convincing impression. The importer is also confident that the Kamiq will drive sales figures further upwards. It is hoped to bring 5,000 to 6,000 cars onto the market this year. The chances of this shouldn't be bad.
