The strong demand for SUVs continues unabated. According to a current study, from 2025 more than 50 percent of new vehicles will be in the SUV segment.
Study author Ferdinand Dudenhöffer from the Center Automotive Research (CAR) at the University of Duisburg-Essen assumes that, even with lower growth, every second new car in Germany will be an SUV by 2030.

From the point of view of science, this assumption may appear threatening to one or the other Greens, but “it is not”. Because the EU's strict CO2 limit values of 95 g / km by 2021 would contribute to the fact that manufacturers are forced to electrify these vehicles as quickly as possible. This is the only way to achieve the limit values. "As strange as it sounds, more SUVs are an opportunity to implement e-mobility more quickly in Germany," says Dudenhöffer.
Polarized vehicle segment
Although no vehicle category is growing as fast as that of SUVs, they are polarizing in the same way. Nevertheless, in October there were 98,708 new registrations of SUVs, which makes up 34.7 percent of new vehicles.
According to the study, SUV sales have grown 11 percent since 2010. The annual sales figure of one million SUVs will be exceeded for the first time in November. According to the CAR extrapolation, 1.095 million new SUVs will be sold in Germany this year. A trend reversal is not in sight. The high pace of SUV sales will continue in the coming years.
Against this background, car manufacturers have to react in order to shoulder the additional consumption by the SUVs and the resulting increase in CO2 emissions. This is why SUVs not only have a high diesel share (31 percent by October), but are also increasingly being launched on the market with a plug-in hybrid or as a purely electric car. In the coming year, for example, the car manufacturer Mercedes will be launching the GLE Coupe with a plug-in hybrid that has an electric range of up to 106 kilometers.
