If a car embodies Land Rover's DNA, it's the Defender. It is the model in the portfolio of the British car manufacturer that has embodied the brand values like no other since the launch of the first Defender in 1948. In the coming year, the new generation of the Defender will be launched in Germany.

Then the SUV will initially be available as the Defender 110. The five-door can already be ordered now for a price from 55,500 euros. The first vehicles will then be delivered in April of the coming year. This is followed by the Defender 90 (49,700 euros) in autumn. The entry-level model with three doors and a shorter wheelbase can be ordered from the beginning of next year.

Defender is also coming to USA and China

The importance of this model for the German market can be seen in the sales figures. The Defender last sold 1500 to 2000 units per year. This made Germany the most important single market for the Defender after Great Britain.

It is unlikely that this will continue to be the case with the new Defender. Because the new model will also be available in the USA and China from next year. The all-wheel drive was not available there so far. With new and efficient engines and, above all, extensive safety equipment, the Defender will now also be available in the two most important car markets in the world.

Plug-in hybrid follows

At the start, the Defender, which is just over 5 meters long, will be available as a P300 with a four-cylinder petrol engine and as a P400 as a mild hybrid with an in-line six-cylinder. The numbers in the model name also stand for the horsepower. There are also two diesels (D200 / D240). You should be satisfied with a consumption of 7.6 liters or more. The Defender's mild hybrid is equipped with a 48-volt electrical system, which saves 6 g / km of CO2. So it comes to an average consumption of 9.6 to 9.9 liters (NEDC). The six-cylinder provides a maximum torque of 550 Nm. Motorized in this way, the all-wheel drive accelerates to 100 km / h in just 6.1 seconds. The top speed is reached at 191 km / h.

A plug-in hybrid with an electric range of just over 50 kilometers will also be available at a later date. This means that the Defender can also benefit from the purchase promotion for plug-in hybrids. Measured against the development of the battery, one would have preferred a greater electric range for a new model. The Mercedes GLE 350 de, for example, has a range of over 100 kilometers.

You can tell straight away that the Defender 110 is not a car for the city - especially when it drives up with the Adventure Pack. Then the scope of equipment not only includes a roof rack (load capacity 168 kilograms), but also a stepladder on the left rear side and an externally attached luggage part on the opposite side.

You can read off its off-road properties in particular from the data: there is an approach angle of 38 degrees at the front and 40 degrees at the rear. So nothing stands in the way of off-road adventures. A protective film is also optionally available for the new Defender, so that expensive paint damage is avoided as far as possible. For those who want to be absolutely sure, a cable winch can also be ordered as an option. If you get stuck, you can let yourself be pulled out of the mud with it - or help other drivers.

Three people can sit in the front

The Defender 110 is offered either as a six-seater or as a 5 + 2-seater. The Defender 90, which has a shorter wheelbase, can accommodate up to six people. Incidentally, the new Defender is built in the factory in Nitra, Slovakia. The Discovery is already being manufactured there.

Now the Defender is added as a second model. It should continue the success story of this model and convince the traditionalists among the Defender drivers that icons also have to arrive technically in the modern age at some point. For example, air suspension is part of the standard equipment of the Defender 110.
